Maritime Rescue has rescued last morning a cayuco and a patera in which they were traveling a total of 196 migrants heading to Canary Islands from the African continent, according to sources from the public body and the Emergency and Security Coordination Center (Cecoes) 1-1-2.
Around 10:00 p.m. yesterday, Saturday, the Civil Guard informed the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Tenerife of a suspicious echo, possibly a cayuco, some 10 miles south of the island, for which reason the ‘Menkalinan’ salvamar was mobilized and the vessels in the area were informed in case they could confirm it.
Little more than an hour later the salvamar ‘Menkalinan’ confirmed the sighting and proceeded to the rescue of the 159 people on board: 130 men and 29 minors, all sub-Saharan. Around 1:30 a.m., he finished his disembarkation at the Los Cristianos pier and a medical transfer was made for different pathologies.
