Food banks ask for help against food poverty

The Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL) alerts that food poverty continues to become chronic in Spain in 2023. According to the entity, there are still more than 1.2 million people who need help to cover their basic food needs.

The Food Bank of Santa Cruz de Tenerife closed 2022 with 20,057 people served.

These data come at a time when food banks are facing great difficulties in stocking up on supplies. The escalation of prices causes them to receive fewer and fewer donations and surpluses in their warehouses, which is why they have been forced to reduce the batches of food that they distribute to each of their beneficiaries. During 2022, it went from a national average of 128 kg per person per year to 122 kg; and the amounts will continue to drop in 2023, according to FESBAL forecasts.

“No home without food”

To address this situation, the ”la Caixa” Foundation and CaixaBank are promoting the fourth edition of the “No home without food” solidarity campaign. As in previous editions, the initiative started with a contribution of 1 million euros from the ”la Caixa” Foundation.

Until July 7, donations can be made through Bizum by sending a contribution to cause 38014. You can also collaborate through the CaixaBank ATM network, through the CaixaBankNow digital banking platform and through the portal www.caixabank.es for donors who are not clients of the entity. The collection will be distributed throughout all the Spanish provinces through the 54 food banks associated with FESBAL.

Between the 2020, 2021 and 2022 editions, this initiative has raised close to 7.5 million euros, with which 7,900 tons of basic food have been obtained. Both FESBAL and the “la Caixa” Foundation and CaixaBank make a new appeal to Spanish companies and society to continue showing their solidarity with those who need it most.

Last year, No Home Without Food raised 32,959 euros for the Food Bank of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

“In this new edition of the campaign, I would like to thank the ”la Caixa” Foundation and CaixaBank for their long and fruitful collaboration with FESBAL in a situation in which many families face great difficulties in meeting their basic food needs,” he assured. the president of the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL), Pedro Miguel Llorca.

“In recent years of chained crises, food banks are doing essential work for the most vulnerable people. We are aware of both your efforts and the situation of need that thousands of families are suffering. For this reason, for yet another year, we maintain our commitment to food banks and we open the campaign with a contribution of 1 million euros. We encourage all companies and citizens to join this request for help to reduce the pocket of food poverty and to be close to those who need it the most”, says the deputy director general of the ”la Caixa” Foundation, Marc Simón.

«CaixaBank joins the campaign to put all its knowledge about means of payment and the technological power of its digital channels at the service of food banks and people who want to make a contribution. Facilitating donations to “No home without food” is a fundamental initiative within the entity’s social vocation”, pointed out the director of Social Action at CaixaBank, Josep Parareda.

All the information on the campaign and the different forms of collaboration can be found on the page www.ningunhogarsinalimentos.org.
