The Granadilla de Abona City Council, through the public company Sermugran, celebrated yesterday, July 5, a new edition of World Environment Day in the Plaza de El Médano. The initiative, framed in the Sustainable Granadilla strategy, which recognizes the work on sustainability in the social, economic and environmental fields, the work in favor of the sustainability of educational centers was recognized through the awards of the ninth edition of Danos the can and Youth in action.

The event lasted until 6:30 p.m., despite the arrival of the squall Oscar, was attended by the mayor, José Domingo Regalado, the first acting deputy mayor and president of Sermugran, Marcos González; the acting Councilor for Education, Yanira González; the person in charge of the Ecoembes Circular Canary Islands Plan, Óscar Estévez Ferrer, and the manager of Sermugran, Aitor González, as well as managers of Entemanser, which manages water, such as Rafael Castillo Robles, delegate of the East of Tenerife.

In this edition of the Youth in Action project, which values sustainable development, the award-winning centers were the IES El Médano and Granadilla de Abona. For its part, the Give us the can program rewarded the work of the Isaac de Vega, La Jurada, Froilán Hernández, Montaña Roja, Los Abrigos, Juan García Pérez, Charco del Pino and La Pasada CEIPs.
Marcos González highlighted that it is a day of celebration and thanked the assistance and work of all the participating educational centers, encouraging them to persist in their work of recycling and caring for water so that Granadilla is a more sustainable municipality, stressing that “this type of of initiatives contribute to making citizens part of the chain of commitment and responsibility, placing Granadilla de Abona as a benchmark in recycling and sustainability in the Archipelago”.

Give us the can, in its ninth edition, is included in the framework of the Sustainable Granadilla project, which seeks to improve the numbers of selective collection by promoting the separation of containers in the yellow container. The objective is the inclusion of families and educational communities in the collection and segregation of household waste through minors. All the centers of the municipality that have participated in this school contest have to their credit various selective separation containers where they can deposit the light packaging recovered thanks to the collaboration of families, AMPAs, teachers and the rest of the social environment of the schools. Under the premise each container adds up, those centers with a greater volume of waste receive an economic contribution with the aim of providing them with school supplies, new technologies and other investments that improve the general educational level of the municipality.
