The city of La Laguna has hosted this Saturday the meeting of the group of World Heritage cities in Spain (GCPHE), a meeting attended by mayors from 15 municipalities awarded with the highest distinction granted by UNESCO, where they highlighted their importance as venues of cultural, commercial and architectural value.
The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, was in charge of inaugurating the meeting after a brief tour of the city that ended in the Plaza del Adelantado, in front of the town hall, where the last assembly took place before the constitution of the new corporations. premises after the last municipal elections.
An occasion that Gutiérrez took advantage of to point out that each one of the towns present there “represents the best of the Spain brand” with “places with unique and exceptional value” that have placed them “on the national and international scene”.
“This has been a very difficult period for our cities, but despite the challenge posed by the pandemic, the GCPHE has come out stronger. We have strengthened our alliances inside and outside our country, we have reached very important agreements with the Government of Spain for the development of conservation policies for our historic quarters”, indicated the mayor of La Laguna.
While highlighting their work as tourist powers after the pandemic, with strong promotional campaigns with a presence at international fairs, in which the cultural offer also stands out with initiatives such as the “Heritage Night”, which has transcended borders and already adds the participation of countries such as Mexico, Peru and Cuba.
The mayor of Tarragona, Pau Ricomá, indicated that despite the fact that this will be the last assembly he attends, after not renewing his position, he feels happy for the “serious work” carried out by the group in defense “of heritage and cities ”.
While his counterpart from Santiago de Compostela, Xosé Sánchez Bugallo, stressed the benefits of a group in which “a climate of dialogue, collaboration and mutual support” reigns, an issue that gives him “enormous satisfaction” and that highlights that Spain “is a very fortunate country for its historical heritage and the life of its cities”.
