The socialist group in the Cabildo de Tenerife rejected in the plenary committee on Sustainability, Roads, Innovation and Culture the motion of the non-attached councilor María José Belda to “paralyze the traditional purification project in the Altavista Refuge, within the Parque Nacional del Teide». He PSOE He understands that it is “an environmental and landscape aberration” and opposes “the construction of a greenhouse as he proposes.”
The Socialist Group understands that the proposed modification of the project translates into building that greenhouse “with a methacrylate roof”, This, the statement added, “contradicts the technical proposal, with the approval of the Insular Water Council, to promote an installation that solves the lack of purification in the area». The note abounds that “a greenhouse in one of the most emblematic places of the Teide National Park is an environmental and landscape aberration.”
Belda proposes paralyzing the project of the Treatment Station for the Altavista Refuge, in the municipality of La Orotava, as she assures that the current proposal “does not comply with natural purification.” However, the Cabildo de Tenerife project is for the insular socialist group “a sustainable infrastructure in a highly sensitive environment, which will improve environmental protection.” In addition, this would be the first step to adapt the facility to environmental criteria that will allow its reopening after more than three years closed. He has also been favorably informed by the Governing Council of the Teide National Board and it was submitted to the simplified environmental assessment at the Tenerife Environmental Assessment Commission (CEAT).
Belda’s endorsements
Belda believes that the endorsement of 620 firms requesting the stoppage of this project should have been taken into account. The non-attached counselor defends “stopping it and providing the solution with a Wastewater Treatment Plant (EDAR) that meets the parameters of natural purification with less repercussion and counterproductive effects on the environment.” For this reason, she requested to “paralyze this project.” She adds that “making believe that a greenhouse with a methacrylate roof is being proposed is a smokescreen from the government group to cover up its false environmentalism or Greenwashing.”
To support the proposal, Belda used a report by Professor Julio Muñiz, an environmental expert, on the consequences of using the traditional system in the Teide National Park. He concludes that “it is not respectful of the environment and its ecosystem.” Muñiz denies that “the proposed alternative to the filter well in Altavista, at more than 3,200 meters high,” is a greenhouse.
