The municipalities in the north of the Island have taken a turn in these elections and it has not been due to the irruption of Vox, which appeared in the 15 municipalities, nor by Ciudadanos, which has completely disappeared.

The changes have come from the citizens, who in certain municipalities have decided that a political overturn was necessary. The most significant has undoubtedly been that of Puerto de la Cruz, where the current mayor and candidate of the PSOE, Marco González, has obtained 10 councilors and has remained a dozen votes short of that expected absolute majority that his party did not reached since 1999.

The other two absolute majorities in the Valley were to be expected: that of Francisco Linares (CC), in La Orotava, and that of Adolfo González (PP), in Los Realejos. The latter, who until the last moment was cautious regarding the results, could not hide yesterday his joy at having managed to revalidate the same results as Manuel Domínguez in 2019. “This was not in anyone’s pool. The objective was to renew the absolute majority and have a comfortable majority, but our expectations have been exceeded. There has been a lot of teamwork and this is the result, because it has been a great effort from many people rowing and a lot of responsibility to continue working as before, which is what we want, ”he told DIARIO DE AVISOS.

One of the great surprises of the night occurred in Icod de los Vinos with the victory of Alternativa Icodense (AI), a local party led by Javier Sierra, who ran for the first time in the 2019 elections, becoming the second largest policy. Alternativa Icodense displaced the Canary Islands Coalition (CC), whose head of the list, Francis González, until now governed the Ciudad del Drago thanks to the vote of the only councilor of Cs.
“We have won the elections, we have obtained more than 4,000 votes, more than 32% of the support of the people of the municipality. We have been working for four years since the opposition and we are going to show that we will govern for all the people of Icodense, and thus we will demonstrate the trust they have placed in us, ”he stressed. However, a pact will be necessary, since AI has obtained eight councilors against the seven of CC, the four of the PP and the two of the PSOE, which failed to rebound despite appearing at the polls together with Somos Icodenses. On the contrary, the PP, led by Coromoto Yanes, has gone from one to four councilors.

This party decided not to appear in Garachico, despite attending since 1999. La Villa y Puerto was another surprise, since José Heriberto González lost the absolute majority. González was facing, among others, former mayor Ramón Miranda, A’Gara’s candidate and former party comrade, who returned to the front line of politics after his disqualification for prevariation and embezzlement of public funds.

The polls left five councilors for the current president against the four that the second obtained and the two from the PSOE that a mayor rose; therefore, everything indicates that a government agreement will also be necessary.

In La Guancha, Antonio González (PP) has also lost the absolute majority when there was a technical draw between PP and CC, with Alejandro Herrera at the helm. Both removed six councilors and the PSOE, one; therefore, everything indicates that this mayor will be the one who decides which of the two parties accesses the Mayor’s Seat.

The same technical tie occurred in Tacoronte, with five councilors from the PSOE and CC, while Nueva Canarias maintains the four of this mandate and the PP goes from one to three.

Likewise, it will be necessary to agree in San Juan de la Rambla despite the fact that Ezequiel González (PSOE) has reached the highest number of votes.

Buenavista del Norte has also suffered an important turn in these elections. Antonio González Fortes (Sí se puede) has lost the Mayor’s Office and the new mayoress will be the socialist Eva García, who will govern with an absolute majority by obtaining 7 of the eleven mayors. The still president congratulated his successor and told this newspaper that “there have been disappointing results for Sí se puede, a resounding defeat at all the tables in the municipality and, therefore, incontestable.” The surprise in this municipality has been the disappearance of the nationalists.

As expected, there are mayors who keep their fiefs. This is the case of La Matanza de Acentejo, where an incombustible Ignacio Rodríguez reaches his eleventh term, or El Sauzal, with Mariano Pérez, as well as Juan Acosta in Santa Úrsula, although it goes from 13 to 12 councilors. According to the results, everything indicates that this mayor is from Vox, being the only municipality in the north of the Island where he gets representation, since the PP and the PSOE, with three and one mayor, respectively, repeat those of 2019.

Esther Morales (PSOE) will continue to be the mayoress of El Tanque with an absolute majority, with eight councilors against the two from CC and only one from the PP, who re-enters the Plenary Session of the City Council leaving aside the two from Nueva Canarias, that has been left without representation. Juan Antonio Abreu (PSOE) will do the same in La Victoria de Acentejo, with nine out of 13 councillors.

Marco González manages to win in three consecutive elections

28-M ELECTIONS Marcos González

The socialist Marco González has managed to repeat the victory of 2015 and 2019, although in the first term he failed to govern, due to a technical tie with the PP in the number of councilors that led the latter to agree with the nationalists. However, in the previous term this situation was reversed and the Socialists agreed to the Mayor’s Seat thanks to a government agreement with the Portuense Citizen Assembly. Last night, González won again, but improving the results.

Six municipalities are obliged to agree to be able to govern this mandate

Six municipalities are obliged to agree to be able to govern for the next four years, either due to a technical tie, as is the case of La Guancha and Los Silos, or because they do not obtain a sufficient majority to govern with relative calm and carry out the projects that they consider important for their municipality.

In addition to La Guancha, Garachico, Los Silos, Tacoronte and Icod de los Vinos, negotiations will begin in the coming days and until mid-June to try to establish the strongest alliances for a possible government.

In Ciudad del Drago, everything indicates that the winner of these elections, Javier Sierra, will govern with the support of the PP, while in Garachico, Ramón Miranda does not hide that he will try it with the PSOE but is also waiting for what they offer his former CC mates.

Unidos se Puede enters Los Silos for the first time, with which, with 92.16% of the votes counted, the Plenary becomes made up of four parties and a very distributed representation: the four councilors of the PSOE, which has won the elections; three from CC; two from the PP and another two from USP, with which a government alliance is indisputable.
