He canary day It is a regional holiday that is celebrated on May 30 and has distinctive characteristics compared to other regional holidays in Spain. Unlike many patron saint festivities, Día de Canarias is not related to religious patronage, which is important in a context where the debate over religious dedications has generated some controversy in the past.

In the 90s, there was a controversy about what is the true Patron saint of the Canary Islandsdespite the fact that since 1867 the Vatican has designated the Virgin of Candelaria as the regional patron saint. At that time, regional patronages were established in Spain that were not limited to religious diocesan divisions.

According to the Holy See and successive ratifications, the Virgin of Candelaria is the regional patron saint of the Canary Islands. However, for the western diocese, known as Nivariense –Tenerife, The Palm, La Gomera and The iron-, the patron saint is Our Lady of Los Remedios, and for the diocese of the Canary Islands –Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and the graceful-, the patron saint is Our Lady of the Pine.
