SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, May 23. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Executive Committee of CEOE-Tenerife has urged this Tuesday to curb the “tourismophobia” that has settled in some sectors of Canarian society and has warned that a good part of employment in the archipelago is at stake.

In a statement, the businessmen point out that Tenerife “is experiencing an escalation of tension at the tourist level” that “worries” because “it can leave a significant mark” on the tourism industry and “endanger” employment on the islands.

Thus, they point out that the manifestations of ‘tourismophobia’ have reached the islands at the hands of various groups that demand, among other issues, a tourist moratorium, the implementation of the eco-tax and the application of a residence law, as could be check in a demonstration last Saturday in the south of the island called by almost a dozen groups in which there were even “direct confrontations with the tourists themselves.”

“We are facing an issue that we must stop since it is easy to spread, putting 35% of the economy and 40% of employment at risk in a sector that generates prestige and is internationally recognized for being an excellent and welcoming destination, hospitable and friendly”, stand out from CEOE-Tenerife.

For this reason, the business association of the western province reaches out to public institutions and social agents “to
work together for a sustainable tourism sector, valuing the benefits that this activity generates in society as a whole”.
