SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, May 22. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Government of the Canary Islands, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, has launched a new call for aid for the financial year 2023 aimed at lowering the cost for farmers of the extra cost of extracting water from wells and galleries, from the desalination and the production of reclaimed water for agricultural irrigation in the Canary Islands

These are funds valued at 14 million euros that will make it possible to lower the high energy costs, which will directly favor the irrigation and water communities, as well as cooperatives and agricultural companies.

These grants will contribute to an efficient management of water for agricultural irrigation, as well as helping to offset the extra energy costs suffered by the islands, as a consequence of their remoteness, until reaching a level equal to that of the rest of the national territory.

Public or private entities that supply water for agricultural irrigation from wells, galleries, seawater desalination facilities and reclaimed water production may be beneficiaries of the subsidies that are called for. Potential beneficiaries include local entities, public law corporations, public companies or estates and communities of Canarian waters, in addition to natural or legal persons that produce water for agricultural irrigation.

The regional manager of the area, Alicia Vanoostende, who stressed that “efficient and sustainable water management is essential for the performance of agricultural activity”, pointed out “that the priority is to promote the improvement of the conditions of farmers and the optimization of water available to contribute to the modernization of irrigation systems in the Archipelago, ensuring its distribution to all citizens”.

The deadline for submitting applications will be one month from the day following the publication of this extract in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC): http://www.gobiernodecanarias.org/boc/2023/097/012.html
