The capital of Tenerife lived this weekend on wheels with the party of the Bicyclea day that brought together adults and children, and that each year gets more followers and increases participation.
The wheels took to the streets of Santa Cruz yesterday, where hundreds of people joined the bike ride that began on Avenida de Madrid and after a journey of more than two hours reached the port esplanade after noon. An hour and a half before the start, the registered people gathered in La Granja park to leave in the direction of Avenida de Bélgica. With the appropriate clothing to pedal for almost two hours, a protective helmet and, in many cases, a backpack with a water reserve to hydrate themselves along the way, the participants enjoyed a day outdoors in which the weather was good at all times.
Skates, skateboards, scooters and the like were also added to lovers of two wheels, but according to the rules established by the organizers of the initiative, electric ones were not allowed.
There were tricycles, go-karts and bikes adapted for people with disabilities.
The Councilor for Sports, Alicia Cebrián, explained that “it was not a competition or a speed test but a pleasant bike ride in a festive atmosphere and along a comfortable route through the center of the city, together with friends and family on streets that are traditionally occupied by vehicles.
Yesterday’s day was the final touch to two days on wheels since the event began on Saturday with a Fun Zone in which sports-educational workshops were held around the bicycle, two of them sponsored by the Fundación Santa Cruz Sostenible. Both took place in the Explanada Puerto Ciudad.
There were also activities throughout the day, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., which in this case consisted of workshops to learn how to ride a bike, mechanics, road safety and first aid, as well as gymkhanas. All these actions were also repeated yesterday.
The Bicycle Festival, which this year celebrated its forty-first edition, was organized by the Sports Service of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, the Fundación Santa Cruz Sostenible and El Corte Inglés.
