SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, May 18. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Governing Council authorized this Thursday the Ministry of Health to spend 3,199,000 euros for the acquisition of a supply of vaccines for the 2023 Flu Campaign and another for an amount of 2,049,200 euros to hire a supply of conjugate pneumococcal vaccine of 20 serotypes, which brings the total amount of the authorized budget item today to 5,248,200 euros.
The General Directorate of Public Health of the Canary Islands Health Service anticipates that for the next vaccination campaign against the seasonal flu virus a total of 335,000 doses of vaccine will need to be administered, of which 25,000 will be nasal spray suspension against Influenza virus (live attenuated, nasal) regrouped into four strains.
From the Government they detail in a note that the flu is one of the infectious diseases of respiratory transmission and acute presentation with the highest incidence in the Canary Islands.
The extreme contagiousness of the virus causes a seasonal epidemic wave to occur every winter, which has important implications for certain demographic groups, such as the elderly or those with chronic illnesses, as well as for certain professional groups.
In this context, influenza prevention is fundamentally based on vaccination, which aims to reduce associated mortality and morbidity and the impact of the disease in the community.
On the other hand, the contracting of the supply of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine of 20 serotypes will be carried out by the aforementioned General Directorate of Public Health of the SCS to acquire 47,000 doses for the vaccination strategies of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands.
