The Brotherhood of Farmers of San Isidro de La Orotava meets 25 years officiallyalthough the history of this group that carries the rods of San Isidro it dates back to several centuries ago. The veneration for this saint and Santa María de la Cabeza started in the municipality In XVII century and many farmers have kept this tradition alive for more than five decades. However, the official constitution of the collective it was produced in 1998 and that is the date that is commemorated in this 2023.
He villero town hall hosted this week the presentation of the book The Brotherhood of Farmers of the Villa de La Orotavawork of the writer and journalist Pedro Hernandez Murillowith photographs of Isidro Felipe Acostawhich reviews the history of this group of men and women who embellish local festivities and religious acts with their peculiar rods of San Isidrolarge chestnut or mulberry sticks, adorned with tacks, which hold colored ribbons, spikes and carnations with wool thread at the top.

The act, which was attended by the farmers and a large audience, was presided over by the mayor of the town, Francisco Linares; the parish priest of the Parish of Our Lady of the Conception, Honorio Camposand the president of the brotherhood, Gregory Jorge Garcia. also participated Jacinto Barrios, who was parish priest in La Orotava for many years and carried out important work for the farmers and for their constitution as a protective brotherhood of the saints. During the ceremony, embroidered ribbons commemorating this 25th anniversary were delivered, to recognize the trajectory of people like Feliciano Illadaone of the farmers with more than 50 years of experience.

The La Orotava City Council highlights that the Brotherhood of Farmers is “unique in the Canary Islands” and received the first prize for Villa de La Orotava Crafts and Heritage, as well as being distinguished as ambassador of the island of Tenerife.
