The Governing Council of the Canary Islands has approved this Thursday, at the proposal of the Health and Finance ministries, the Multiannual Planning Instrument for the management of human resources of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) through which the organic workforce exceeds 27,668 workers to 34,723 belonging to more than 75 different categories, 25.5% more.
At a press conference, the Minister of Health, Blas Trujillo, who commented that what is sought is to “adapt the templates to reality” in such a way that “everything structural” appears reflected in the templates and also in compliance with the latest legal modifications such as the temporary law and the modification of the framework statute of the health worker.
He has also commented that this new planning, which is carried out until 2025 at a cost of 346.3 million, will serve to set the replacement rates and believes that ultimately “citizens also win” because care provision is improved and guaranteed.
Of the 7,055 more troops, a total of 1,175 are doctors and 2,241 nurses.
With this “historic measure” in the SCS, the counselor pointed out, the commitment to increase stability in public employment is fulfilled since it will allow temporary workers in health centers and hospitals, hired during the pandemic, to move to the condition of interim in a vacant position until the announcement of the opposition tests.
This measure, Trujillo has commented, is possible thanks to the fact that the Government of the Canary Islands included an additional provision in Law 7/2022, of December 28, on the General Budgets of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands for 2023 that would allow not only the adequate dimension of the workforce, but also the stability of the staff, the education and training necessary to achieve improvement in the care activity.
Of the 7,055 eventual professionals who will be hired as interim in the coming weeks, 1,175 are physicians, of whom 645 are area specialist physicians, 23 pediatricians and the rest are family doctors.
In addition, 2,241 are nurses, of which 58 are specialists in Mental Health, 17 in Occupational Medicine and 21 in Pediatrics, this being the first time that nursing specialties are considered as such in organic staff.
Likewise, 82 physiotherapists, 55 social workers, 120 laboratory technicians and 97 radiodiagnostic technicians, 1,310 nursing assistants, 654 administrative assistants and 589 orderlies, among other professional categories, will also be hired as temporary workers.
The instrument, approved by the Government, will serve as the basis for the authorization, where appropriate, also by the latter and in accordance with the current basic regulations, of a specific replacement fee.
The plan is configured with the following objectives: efficient management, the adequacy of human resources, stabilization in employment, as well as the promotion of training, teaching and research.
