Tenerife kiosks show solidarity with La Palma

The kiosks of the capital yesterday celebrated their day in a special way.

The Day of the Press Seller or the Day of the Kiosquero, which is commemorated every October 5, is an event promoted by the Federation of National Kiosk Associations, to which the Santa Cruz de Tenerife kiosks belong, grouped in Adekos. In the Peninsula, the kiosks deliver roses to their customers to celebrate it, but those of the Tenerife capital wanted to do it this year in an original way and, at the same time, in solidarity: giving their customers a banana from La Palma to support the affected by the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano.

The initiative was well received and in many of the establishments the fruit was finished before noon. In the case of Pedro Moreno, Adekos’s secretary and owner of the Moreno Kiosk, located in the central Robayna street, at twelve o’clock he had run out of any of the 16 kilos contained in the box he had bought. “If we knew that it was going to be so well received, we would have bought more kilos of bananas,” he says.

In total, there were about 15 associates who joined the campaign and who distributed about 150 kilos distributed in 12 boxes among the most strategic points of the Tenerife capital.

Given the speed with which they organized to get everything ready, the kiosks are aware that this would have been impossible without the help of Frutería Toño y Mari, who collaborated in delivering the fruit quickly and at cost. “Perhaps without them we would not have succeeded,” he stresses.

They all wanted to contribute their bit to help the residents of the island of La Palma “to continue to have work, because those people give us tremendous pain,” confesses Pedro.

The initiative was not only greeted with surprise by the clientele, but also with great acceptance. Newspapers, magazines, trinkets, sweets, hobbies or just a bottle of water or soda, no matter what they bought, customers took their banana. “Nobody rejected them, he points out. What’s more, it was curious because there were people who wanted to leave money for the owners of the establishments to give to the palmeros and they had to explain that it was an initiative of the kiosks to collaborate with La Palma and that the banana was a gift.

There was also time to share a pleasant moment all together. And, although it was not exactly on October 5, some members of Adekos came forward and enjoyed a meal last Friday to which they invited the mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, and in which they took the opportunity to thank the support provided by the City Hall during the pandemic.
