The United Sí Podemos candidates for the Cabildo de Tenerife and the Mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Manuel Marrero and Ramón Trujillo, respectively, have promised this Thursday to withdraw the monument to Franco located in the Ramblas of the capital before the “affront” of CC for not complying with the law of historical memory.

In statements to journalists, Trujillo has denounced the lack of “democratic culture” of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Town Hall given that the monument to Franco could have already been removed without the need to apply the historical memory law, just as “any party of the left or right” would do in Germany.

He has indicated that this monument is an “exaltation of the Spaniard who has killed the most Spaniards in the history of the country” and in parallel to its demolition he proposes removing the “most hurtful” vestiges and holding a citizen consultation to see how the space that would remain is reformulated free on the Ramblas.

“This is not from the right or the left but from the Democrats,” he added.

Marrero has criticized that “high doses of democracy” are lacking in CC because, among other things, “it competes with the right and the extreme right”, and understands that the mayor of the capital, José Manuel Bermúdez, “has no more excuses” to remove the monument .

“Today, being a democrat is being anti-fascist,” he commented, urging the council to comply with the law and to remove the monument from public roads “immediately.”
