This Tuesday, the president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, announced an agreement with the School of Medicine of the University of La Laguna to delay the start of classes until after ten in the morning in the first three courses. The goal is to alleviate traffic on highways during morning rush hours.
This agreement, which will enter into force next academic year, will cost two million euros for the Cabildo de Tenerife, which will be transferred to the University of La Laguna for research and improvement of its facilities. The announcement was made during a press conference in which the president of the corporation exposed his electoral plans in relation to public transportation.
Martín highlighted the PSOE’s commitment to public transport, both nationally, with the free tram and urban buses, and in Tenerife. In addition, he announced the acquisition of 249 new buses for the Titsa fleet, at a cost of 88 million euros, approved on Tuesday.
The president of the Cabildo highlighted that in 2022 230 new workers were hired for Titsa, to face the increase in demand for the use of public transport. During the first quarter of the year, the use of buses increased by 45% and the use of the tram by 49%.
Martín also mentioned the acquisition of “latest generation buses” that will reduce CO2 emissions by seven tons per year.
Among other measures to improve public transport, the bus-vao lanes for preferential use stand out, for which there are two projects available: one between Güímar and Santa Cruz, and another between the University Hospital and Las Chumberas.
Pedro Martín promised to continue promoting agreements between the Cabildo and the different municipalities willing to collaborate to improve public transport.
In relation to the concerns in Tacoronte regarding the layout of the third lane of the TF-5, Martín affirmed that said expansion is necessary, but “the best fit” must also be sought with the City Council and those affected.
