CANARY ELECTIONS 2023: Few changes are coming

The PSOE was the party with the most votes on May 26, 2019 in eight of the 12 municipalities in the south of Tenerife. They reach 28M with six Mayoralties: Candelaria, Fasnia, Vilaflor, Arona, Adeje and Guía de Isora; Despite the victory, he did not govern in Granadilla de Abona and lost that of Arico, due to a motion of no confidence after only half a year in office, whose first two years he managed the Mayor’s Office of Güímar in agreement with CC, a party to which he handed it over in 2021. Canarian Coalition he won by an absolute majority in San Miguel de Abona and in Arafo, but he also governs in Granadilla de Abona, in agreement with the PP. The Popular Party won in Güímar, where he did not govern, and in Santiago del Teidewith the absolute majority reached by its now insular president, Emilio Navarro.

The presence of Vox in all the electoral constituencies of the South region leaves it as a reference for the right in Fasnia, in the absence of the Popular Party.

Fasnia.

In the case of the second least populated municipality in the south of the Island, PSOE and CC are fighting for votes with Drago Verdes Canary Islands (DVC), VOX and Ahora Canarias-La Alternativa de Fasnia. The mayor, the socialist Luis Javier gonzalez, makes his debut as a candidate because he took office by taking over from Damián Pérez, on March 15, 2022. His challenge is to maintain the absolute majority that he inherited. Opposite, CC, the only opposition party, presents the person who was mayor from 1987 to 2011 (except 1991), Pedro Hernández. The presence of the remaining three parties is worrying about the number of votes that may subtract from the two predominant formations, among which the fasniero Daniel Delgado stands out. The campaign is punctuated by the nationalist complaint against the alderman and socialist candidate for signing decrees with contrary reports. The matter is in court.

Vilaflor.

The Popular Party returns, after being absent from municipal politics since the elections held in 2015. If the popular supporters bet on Eduardo Núñez, Coalición Canaria changes its headliner this time and proposes Jesús Manuel Quijada to try to avoid an absolute majority of Agustina Beltrán, the socialist who has had her only opposition in the nationalists since 2019. The previous four years they were members of the municipal government. And there is VOX. It so happens that the PSOE has held the Mayor’s Office of Vilaflor de Chasna since 1987.

San Miguel de Abona.

The only fief that the nationalists have governed since 2019 with an absolute majority in the South, recovered after several periods of pacts and even a step through the opposition, maintains the charismatic Arturo González as a candidate. A political reference in the region given his extensive presence in the Consistory (since the last decade of the 20th century), he confronts Valentín González, today the local leader of the Popular Party and former government companions in CC and with the CCN, when the popular candidate he led it in the municipality. In addition to VOX, the people of San Miguel will have the option of citizens. Located between Granadilla de Abona and Arona, San Miguel de Abona is a municipality that is on the rise as its population index increases and it experiences notable urban and commercial growth.

Arico.

One of the few municipalities in which uncertainty is primed. With the socialist senator Olivia Delgado in contention, for the fourth time and as the winner on election night, until now, it remains to be known the repercussion at the polls of the motion of censure that she experienced five months after being mayor for the second time -the first It was after a year, in 2012– and by the Canary Coalition candidate, Víctor García, from Primero Arico, who will pass his first exam on 28M. Opposite is also Andrés Martínez, for the PP and for the fourth time, too. In addition to VOX, Nueva Canarias competes with Pedro Jonay Díaz, mayor of the PP during part of the mandate. One of the keys will be José Luis Hervella or Arico Somos Todos, a formation that emerged from a neighborhood movement.

Santiago del Teide.

The Canarian municipality with the most investment per inhabitant will decide the 28M between the absolute majority of the insular leader of the PP, Emilio Navarro, the CC’s commitment to Francisco Montesdeoca after the departure of Jonathan Martín Fumero, the presence of VOX and the socialist María Raquel Paz.
