The Tacoronte City Council has proceeded this morning to the withdrawal of the last symbol of the Francoism who remained in the municipality. It is a plate, located on one side of the St. Catherine’s Churchdedicated to the figure of Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera.
The recognition of the founder of the Spanish Falange was placed in 1938 by the Franco regime. Carved in stone, he stood on the left side of a cross also made of stone, on the side of the temple where the tower is located, on which the phrase read: “José Antonio. PRESENT”.
After several petitions and protests, such as the attack with red paint that he received in May 2022, the municipal council has proceeded to withdraw it, in compliance with the Democratic Memory Law, and in coordination with the Bishopric of Tenerife, the entity that owns the temple, as well as with Heritage.
This regulation establishes in its article 15 on symbols and monuments, that the public administrations will take the appropriate measures for the removal of shields, insignia, plaques and other objects or commemorative mentions of personal or collective exaltation of the military uprising, of the civil war and the repression of the dictatorship.
