Nine companies present offers to build the Motor Circuit in Atogo

Nine companies present their offers to build the Circuit of the Engine of Tenerife in Atogo (Abona granadilla). The president of the council, Peter Martinexplained that «today (for this Tuesday) The first envelope of the works adjudication process has been opened», and announced that «in the coming weeks we will move forward to complete the selection process». He was optimistic and stated that “at the end of this month or at the beginning of June” he is confident that “the final award” will take place to “the company that is going to start with the works of the Circuit.”

The Governing Council of the Council of Tenerife approved last March the dossier for contracting the works. For the construction of this automobile infrastructure, the Island Corporation has a bidding budget of 51.9 million euros and establishes an execution period of 40 months.

The works object of the contest that Pedro Martín expects to solve in less than a month include the execution of three projects. Specifically, it involves channeling the three ravines included in the ground that the Motor Circuit will occupy with the Flood Defense Plan, the earthworks and installations for removable stands and, finally, the speed track.

The Circuit will occupy around 650,000 square meters of surface and will be enabled to hold all kinds of competitions with quality and, above all, with safety. The project has the approvals of the International Automobile Federation and the International Motorcycle Federation, which authorize the holding of training and formula 1 racing and MotoGP.

The Circuit will have facilities dedicated to training around motorsports and, also, there will be plots where companies related to this sector can be installed in which to test components, competition materials, assembly of parts and repair.

Characteristics

Once the works are finished, the Motor Circuit of Tenerife will have a layout of 4,050 meters, will have a main straight of 800 meters long and a series of secondary straights designed to facilitate overtaking, especially in the case of cars, with various ramps that will be a spectacle for motorcycles. In addition, it will be characterized by being one of the few circuits in the world in which circulation will be carried out in an anti-clockwise direction.

The route is developed with a total of 16 curves in plan, of which there will be 11 left and 5 right. All of them will have different base radii starting from a minimum of 21 meters to a maximum of 100 meters. Transversely, the curves will have a single slope that varies between 1% and 5% depending on the radius and speed of travel.

All this will be complemented with a 72,000 square meter paddock prepared to accommodate all the needs required by any national or international competition. There will be 15 boxes for cars and 45 for motorcycles. The infrastructure will also have a grandstand with capacity for more than 5,000 people, a restaurant and a shopping area.

The history

On October 30, 1990, the Cabildo and the company TN, of Barcelona, they signed the agreement to draw up the project for the Tenerife circuit, something they did from 1997 to 2000, but it is not the one that will be built. On March 25, 1995, the Island Corporation began the file of the Motor Sports Center (his first name), definitively approved by the Plenary on March 12, 2008. It would not be until May 18, 2015 when the Cabildo awarded the work to the company Kiti Trans SLU, which laid the first stone on October 28, 2016. In June 2017, the works were paralyzed and the Administration was forced to terminate the contract with the company. With the new mandate, in October 2020 the works of the North access began while the project was being finalized.
