The Commission for the defense of the Valleseco beach does not give up and continues to demand that the Santa Cruz City Hall back off and prohibit the entry of dogs on the beach of acapulco, the first in the capital in which the presence of dogs is admitted, and whose authorization coincided with the opening of the new bathroom space in El Bloque. After a first moment in which it seemed that the mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, agreed with them, the reality is that the decree signed by the Councilor for the Environment, Carlos Tarife, is still in force. For this reason, the Platform has started collecting signatures to request that the presence of dogs on the aforementioned beach be prohibited.
From the collective it is clarified that “it is not a campaign against dogs” and ensures that it is quite the opposite. “We have verified, since the first signatures collected, that the pet owners themselves understand that Acapulco is a very small beach, with callaos, and not at all appropriate for the game and recreation of these animals,” he affirms.
He adds that these same owners support and sign the petition led by the Platform, which has addressed a letter to the mayor asking him to keep his word.
The document states that, in the days following the authorization for the dogs to access the Acapulco beach, “the massive presence of dogs causes dirt, disputes and general discomfort among the different users of the aforementioned beach.”
The Commission continues by recalling that Bermúdez accepted their request at the meeting they held on April 4, but that, finally, “has not complied with the agreement to suppress the presence of dogs on the beach.”
The neighborhood group acknowledges that “there is a demand for sea spaces for the use of these animals”, although it insists that “the assigned area, small and of callao, does not meet the necessary conditions”.
With this background, the Commission has begun collecting signatures to once again prohibit the presence of dogs and to demand that the mayor “keep his promise.”
The first beach for dogs
The demand of pet owners to have a space where they can be with their pets on the beaches of the capital has been repeated for years. The Environment Area wanted to give a first response with the decree that allows the Acapulco beach to become the first for dogs in Santa Cruz. The decree, which after the protests of the residents of Valleseco, was reinforced by placing posters and reminding that pets must be on a leash at all times, being released from the leash only when they enter the water, is still in force, and will shortly be It will be reinforced with the opening of new spaces.
This was announced a few weeks ago by the person in charge of the Environment, Carlos Tarife, who pointed out that the technical feasibility is already being studied so that Las Gaviotas beach is the next to host this type of space for pets. “We are preparing a technical project for a second dog beach in Las Gaviotas, where we intend to have a limited part to be with the dogs and another in which not,” Tarife explained then.
The also mayor of Public Services advanced that all the residents of Santa Cruz will be able to comment on these new spaces. Both issues, the dog beach format in Valleseco and Las Gaviotas, will be submitted to a participatory process, where people will be exposed to how and where it will be done. It will not be consulted if dog beaches are yes or no, since Tarife understands that this is not in question.
Regarding the possibility of Las Teresitas beach hosting a space for dogs, which has always been the main proposal of pet owners and different groups, there are technical problems that prevent this solution. The main one is the lack of continuous regeneration of the water due to the dam.
