SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, May 8. (EUROPE PRESS) –

Pedro Martín, president of the Cabildo de Tenerife and PSOE candidate for re-election, has held a meeting with representatives of the Tenerife livestock sector where he has shown his “commitment” to the island’s traditional livestock breeds.

Martín also appreciated that “new lines of work must continue to be opened to achieve the most important thing: generational change, that young people are willing to bet on livestock as a professional opportunity.”

The meeting was attended by representatives of the National Association of Tinerfeña Goat Breeders (Acricati), the Tenerife Livestock Drag Federation, the Canary Islands Drag Association for the Promotion and Breeding of Coarse Cattle and the National Breeders of Select Beef of the Canary Breed (ACA). , the Cooperativa del Campo La Candelaria and the Association of Cattlemen of Tenerife (Agate).

In addition, the insular Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, was also present.

Martín recalled the 6.7 million euros that the Cabildo has allocated during this term to help feed livestock on the island.

Thus, the island investment was 1.4 million in 2021, the same amount as in 2022 and in 2023 the figure rises to 2.5 million, so in total, 6.7 million euros have been promoted throughout the mandate in aid to feed livestock.

In addition, aid for livestock feed was promoted by the PSOE of Tenerife from the Cabildo in 2020, as a result of Covid-19, collects a note from the socialists.

This 2023 is the fourth consecutive year that the budget has been increased by 1.1 million to try to alleviate, as far as possible, the aggravated economic situation of the livestock sector, as a consequence of the energy crisis, the increase in the price of feed and the impact of the Ukrainian war.

In fact, explained Martín, “this year 2023 the budget of the primary sector is greater than that of tourism, because it is a strategic sector in Tenerife.”

CHANGE OF CONSUMPTION HABITS

Among the problems faced by livestock on the island of Tenerife are also changes in consumption habits and the need to modernize the livestock industry.

“We must work to balance the decrease in dairy products in cheese factories, products that they need to be able to make their products,” Pedro Martín valued, adding that work must be done to “stabilize the market.”

The commitment is to promote different lines of aid to support the sector since joint work between the administration and productive sectors is key to boosting its economy.

“We also work so that the bureaucracy can be streamlined and the aid arrives on time, when it is needed,” Pedro Martín specified.

Other lines of subsidy and aid launched during this mandate of socialist management are those of artisanal cheese factories (200,000 euros), complementary feeding of bees (140,000 euros), the maintenance of traditional breeds (60,000 euros), to the livestock associations (48,900 euros), the promotion of professional beekeeping (50,000 euros), rabbit and swine insemination (210,000 euros) and the maintenance of the Insular Slaughterhouse (1.9 million euros).

In addition, this Tuesday the approval of the bases and the call for subsidies to the Livestock Health Defense Groups of the island will be taken to the Island Government Council.
