Thousands of people packed the Rambla de Santa Cruz and the Paseo de las Tinajas yesterday to contemplate the 28 recycled crosses made by schoolchildren and the 14 made with flowers and natural elements from the institutions and companies that are traditionally exhibited on both walks, in the framework of the day of celebration of the Day of the Cross and in which the heat tightened in the morning, although it softened throughout the afternoon.

The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, made the traditional walk along the boulevard, accompanied by councilors from the City Council and the Queen of the May Festival, among others, and encouraged by a party to “admire something that is traditional on this day , in which Santa Cruz celebrates 529 years of history, which are our crosses”. “It is a great tradition; Not in vain, Santa Cruz is named like that and, in this way, we celebrate the anniversary and the name of the city, with the Holy Cross, which we will take out in procession through the streets, as it has been done for so many years, the same cross that it was planted on the coast of Añazo 529 years ago”, he highlighted.

The good weather and the fact that it is festive in the capital encouraged chicharreros and many tourists to walk along the boulevard to enjoy the atmosphere, contemplate the originality of the school crosses or the beauty of the flowers in the bowers, and, as is tradition, take them out Lots of pictures and take lots of selfies. And it is that the mobile was the most handy element among the attendees, among whom families predominated, from grandparents to grandchildren, who stopped especially at school girls to go through the details of their preparation, which each year gain in originality. From crosses made with toys, recycled books or watches, even with references to well-known children’s titles such as Harry Potter, through others converted into trees, painters, typical Canarian balconies or with a photocall included for the little ones.

Many tourists too, more than one looking surprised by the morning heat, among the locals. And it is that behind the mobile, the next items that people were seen carrying the most, as the morning progressed and the heat increased, were bottles of water and hats, among repeated comments about the heat and the search for the coveted shade. Luckily, around noon the clouds began to appear, which made the rest of the day much more bearable.

In addition, the XLVI Regional Exhibition of Flowers, Plants and Crafts and the Book Fair were still open in García Sanabria Park, which also attracted a large number of people yesterday to enjoy the 11 plant exhibitors; another 42 tents for the exhibition and sale of traditional and contemporary craft products, as well as 17 stands corresponding to the gastronomic exhibition and the Book Fair. An offer that was completed with children’s workshops, inflatables, the functions of the emblematic Gorgoritos and food trucks.

The big day of the May Festivities ended with the procession of the Foundational Cross, with which it was remembered that Santa Cruz was 529 years old yesterday.
