The cross made by Guillermo Aryday Martinez Ramos has been the winner of the traditional Contest of Crosses of Natural Flowers of Santa Cruz for the May Festivities, as announced by the capital’s City Council on Wednesday.

The second prize of this edition went to the cross made by the La Era y El Trigo Neighborhood Association, followed by the San Gerardo Neighborhood Association (third prize), the Tamaragua Cultural Center (fourth) and the Yacht Club (fifth). .

In total, this year 18 crosses were submitted to the contest by neighborhoods and towns throughout the municipality. For Guillermo Martínez, a 23-year-old resident of La Gallega and a florist by profession, it is the first time that he has presented himself individually, although in the past he had already received a second prize, on behalf of the neighborhood residents’ association, and a first of the crosses on the Rambla. “I am very satisfied, because it is the first year that we have managed to make the cross inside the hermitage and we have used the original structure of the cross. We wanted to go back to our roots, to go back to our times of yesteryear with our festivals and, for this reason, we decided to use the original structure of the cross and put it in the hermitage, which had been closed for several years, and return to the feeling of the neighborhood. For this reason, we also choose cheerful colors, so that joy returns to our neighborhood with our traditional festivals, ”he explained.

A work that he carried out together “with the festival commission and the AA.VV. Guacimara, from La Gallega”, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. last Tuesday, and in which “we have made a cross of flowers, but one that is not worked on as usual, a slightly new version, but somewhat following the traditional lines. We have used astromelias, solidago, gerberas, lilies, proteas…. And we have created textures with bark, everlasting, chefleras, ”he pointed out.

The jury for the awards was made up of the window dresser and interior designer, Elena González; the crafts technician of the Cabildo de Tenerife and maker of traditional crosses from La Palma, Juan Carlos Camacho, and the florist teacher and manager of the company Rincón Floral de La Orotava, Montserrat Domínguez.
