In recent weeks various irregularities have been denounced by the party of the current mayor of the city, Jose Manuel Bermudez. Among them is the improper use of public funds for the generation of electoral propaganda, as well as the dissemination of publicity and glorification of actions of the municipal government on dates in which it is not allowed, both in social networks and in traditional media.
The denounced acts consist of the placement of billboards in Añaza and La Gallega about the institutional campaign “Suroeste Avanza”, the publication of videos on social networks about the supposed results of the municipal Asphalt Plan, the use of municipal resources in the placement of billboards in Tome Cano announcing a supposed opening of a new sports center that has not even been built and the celebration of two meetings organized and presented by the mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, one with former members of an educational center with the objective of selling achievements politicians and another of a meeting with neighbors to present a distant project idea.
Faced with these situations, the PSOE presented the corresponding complaints before the Electoral Board of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Zone, which finally agreed with the Socialists and ordered the immediate stoppage of acts contrary to the Organic Law of the Electoral Regime (LOREG ) and the removal of electoral propaganda that was found in inappropriate places, both physical and digital.
This decision represents a victory in the fight against the partisan use of public resources in the city and the end of a practice established during the Bermúdez government in which the public resources of the city council are confused with the resources of the Canary Islands Coalition, breaking institutional neutrality. . In addition, they stress that citizens deserve a clean and transparent electoral campaign, in which proposals are debated and the rules are respected.

This is not the first time something like this has happened, recently the Electoral Board issued the order to remove the billboards on which the candidate to the Presidency of the Canary Islands for the Popular Party, Manuel Domingueznext to the motto Someone to trust considering that it is “a means of electoral advertising” and not a “means of dissemination of acts or rallies for the presentation of candidacies.”
Yeray Gutierrez (PSOE)
The Zone Electoral Board has ordered the removal of the electoral billboards of the PSOE in La Laguna in which its candidate, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, appears surrounded by personalities from the municipality under the motto Committed to La Laguna.
The mandate of the Electoral Board occurred as a result of a complaint by the Popular Party (PP), which was also forced to remove billboards, and the Canary Islands Coalition (CC), against the PSOE and specifically states that “electoral propaganda cannot be disseminated or carry out any act of electoral campaign once it has legally ended”; In addition, he also recalled that “the free obtaining of media provided by public administrations will be limited to the strict period of the electoral campaign.”
The Board understands that the billboards violate this principle and makes it clear that since the elections are called, contracts of this type cannot be made, nor can the distribution, for the purposes of electoral propaganda, of diverse material such as pins, lighters, pens or key rings, the same as exhibiting photos of candidates or posters with the name of a political formation in private homes.
City Hall of El Rosario
The Electoral Board of San Cristóbal de La Laguna also orders the El Rosario City Council to withdraw institutional advertising from its website and official social networks. “The Rosariero consistory must eliminate publications that exalt the management of the government group IR-Verdes-Sí se puede for violating the principles of objectivity and transparency of the electoral process.”
The Electoral Board communicated this past Wednesday, April 26, that “it is appropriate to request the El Rosario City Council for the imminent withdrawal of the website, as well as its social networks, of the content denounced in the PSOE letter.” In addition, it urges the Rosariero consistory “to refrain from making, in the future, publications of similar or equivalent content.”
