The candidate of PSOE to the Mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Patricia Hernandezhas proposed putting elevators in all buildings with more than two floors, a policy that already began during her year in office and that, if she becomes mayor, she will reactivate as of May 28.
“We will install elevators in all buildings with more than two floors to restore freedom to the citizens of Santa Cruz who live isolated in their homes,” announced the socialist candidate, while stressing that this measure will be at zero cost.
In addition, Patricia Hernández said that she will guarantee that the actions carried out within the ARRUs will always incorporate the installation of elevators. In this sense, he mentioned the particular case of Santa María del Mar, “where Bermúdez, despite having the feasibility study and knowing that the installation was free for the residents, did not carry it out and even hid it from the Hundreds of people who live there.
With this proposal, Hernández ratifies his commitment to the accessibility of the citizens of the municipality, who “live sequestered in their homes”, and pointed out that this measure goes beyond responding to people with reduced mobility: “We are thinking of people with children little ones, in possible injuries that prevent them from going up and down stairs, doing the shopping, that is, daily tasks that we all do in our day to day”.
The socialist candidate recalled that during her tenure a feasibility study of the buildings was carried out and assured that said installation could be carried out in all of them. However, she pointed out that currently the only ones that are being posted are two in La Salud, both signed by her, because “there was no turning back.”
“This is not an empty promise, it is not an infographic, it is not a headline, it is a reality that paralyzed Bermúdez. The residents have two options, choose between the insouciance of the Bermúdez team or the accessibility that we propose, ”he added.
This accessibility policy, championed by the socialist candidate, would affect the oldest buildings in the municipality, especially public promotion infrastructures that did not contemplate the installation of elevators in their day and that require immediate intervention. Measure that, as Hernández highlighted, “would make life easier for thousands of citizens of Santa Cruz” and that would be implemented in neighborhoods such as Santa María del Mar, La Salud, Chimisay, Cepsa, Los Verodes, Somosierra or the lower part of Miramar, among many others. “I will put an end to the nightmare of thousands of chicharreros and chicharreras going up and down your stairs,” she added.
Accessibility is a universal right recognized as such in the State Law for Urban Rehabilitation, Regeneration and Renewal (2013) that allows occupying the surfaces of free spaces or public domain, when it is not technically viable, to favor the installation of elevators or other elements in order to protect this right
