A dozen representatives of Tenerife social groups and Podemos Canarias visited the European Parliament in Brussels to warn about the damage to the Cuna del Alma tourism macro-project, in the town of Adeje. There they met with MEPs and representatives of the European Commission, to whom they have conveyed the seriousness of what Cuna del Alma represents for its possible aggression against spaces of the Natura 2000 Network (protected by European legislation) and whose environmental impact statement could break the law.

Invited by Podemos MEP Idoia Villanueva, the visit was attended by, among others, Manolo Marrero, spokesman for the Sí Podemos Canarias parliamentary group; the activists María González Acosta (Salvar el Puertito) and José Manuel González Piedehierro (El Coqueluche Association), and Gabriel González, councilor for Podemos Adeje. All of them have highlighted the power of social mobilization in Tenerife to achieve the precautionary stoppage of the Cuna del Alma works for six months (until the end of May).

“Today the European Commission has done nothing more than agree with us about the need to have environmental impact statements when you want to carry out projects like this one next to areas protected by law and by the Natura 2000 Network”, stated Idoia Villanueva. “This project is affecting various environmental directives and the Canarian heritage. There are already procedures to stop it,” she said. In addition, she reiterated how the European Commission “will be very alert in the coming months in case someone revokes the stoppage of the works.”
