The Way of the Coast of Hidalgo Pointalso known as ‘Camino de San Juanito’, has been certified as ‘Sendero Azul’ by the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (Adeac) for the third consecutive year. This quality mark is awarded to routes and landscape elements that contribute to the sustainable use of the coast. This path It is recognized for its environmental values and has extended its length by about 450 meters, up to 2.7 kilometers.

The itinerary begins at the Roquete beach and extends to the San Juanito hermitage, passing by the Arenisco natural pool and the Punta del Hidalgo Lighthouse. The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, has affirmed that the ‘Blue Path’ recognizes the environmental values of the coast and the continuous work to recover this natural environment.

The City Council, through the Town Planning Management, has drawn up a project of six differentiated actions to consolidate the regeneration, improvement and conservation of the natural resources of this coastal area. The project will involve an investment of approximately 3.5 million euros to strengthen the landscape and biodiversity values.

The objective of the project is to act on the agents that have caused the loss of heritage resources and limited the biological potential of the area, and to initiate a process of recovery of the ecosystem. It also takes into account the social function that this stretch of coastline represents for public use as a place of recreation, promenade, leisure, sports and citizen recreation facing the sea.

The main intervention measure is the extraction of all the material that is deposited in the area, and that forms a slope or spill barrier. In this way, the ebb and flow of the tide will not encounter this artificial obstacle and will act against the rise in sea level as one of the effects derived from climate change.

In addition, it will be possible to raise the sea level covered by the spills, so that biological resources can settle in the numerous puddles and rocks that will be exposed, thereby facilitating the evolution of the ecosystem. Other interventions are related to the rehabilitation and compaction of the pavement of the promenade to improve accessibility, the promotion and revegetation of the inner edge with native species, the burying of part of the existing power line, the dignification of the space and surroundings of the lighthouse, or the execution of an integrated square next to the hermitage of San Juanito.

The ‘Camino de la Costa de Punta del Hidalgo’ is the only trail in Tenerife that has obtained this distinction and in 2023 only two other itineraries in the Canary Islands have received it: El Time, in the La Palma municipality of Tazacorte, and the Bahía del Confital-Playa de las Canteras, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Definitely,
