The Council of Tenerife protects activists at risk for defending human rights in different countries. This is the purpose of the visit to the Island of ten people from Equatorial Guinea, Venezuela and Colombia to make visible and expose their work in these “very complicated” environments in educational centers. Especially in the fight in favor of diversity, girls, women and LGTBIQA groups*.

The Noble Hall dressed up to welcome them at a reception to recognize the work they do in favor of peace and the defense of equality, diversity and human rights among vulnerable groups. The event was attended by the councilors for Citizen Participation and Diversity, Nauzet Gugliotta; Equality and Prevention of Gender Violence, Priscila de León, and Foreign Action, Liskel Álvarez.

Conchi Zerolo, vice president of the Pedro Zerolo Foundationand Irene Piedrabuena, from the Mamachama Association. Both groups develop respective projects subsidized with 60,000 euros, 30,000 per entity, which they submitted to the specific public call for the protection of these people. The group participates in awareness and visibility activities subsidized by Social Action, Citizen Participation and Diversity. The activities began in March and will last until June.

Through the Pedro Zerolo Foundation, the project We are part of the world is executed. It promotes cooperation actions in Equatorial Guinea and Venezuela for the promotion of LGBTIQA* activism and the development of strategies for social change in Tenerife. Today some training sessions start at the ULL. The Foundation transferred to Tenerife three women, activists and defenders of the rights of LGBTIQA* people in Equatorial Guinea, and three other colleagues from the African country and three Venezuelans. Everyone will take part in the agenda of activities.

For its part, through the Mamachama Association, Pedagogies are developed from the arts for human rights and the construction of peace. A job in the defense of the rights of girls and women in rural areas of Colombia affected by the presence of illegal armed groups. The association has transferred to the Island the Colombian Yurelkis Arrieta Gómez, defender of the human rights of girls and women, especially against sexual violence in areas where the armed conflict is active.

Gonzalo Abaha, from Guinea, Tamara Adrián, from Venezuela, and Yurelkis Arrieta, from Colombia, took the floor yesterday to explain the processes in their passes. Different, but similar in terms of the risk involved in defending human rights. Tenerife protects them.
