The wines and vermouths of Tenerife closed the participation of the Island in the Salón Gourmets de Madridan appointment that began last Monday and ended this Thursday.

Tenerife brought the uniqueness and diversity of its wines to more than 3,000 people, through 48 references from the six denominations of origin of the island. In addition, the Island surprised the attendees with a presentation of fig coffee, for which companies from Germany, Vietnam and the United Kingdom have already been interested.

Throughout these four days of work they have passed through the stand of the Island renowned chefs, companies, sommeliers and professionals from gastronomy and hospitality. All of them have been able to get to know and taste some of the best products of the Tenerife primary sector, such as fresh meats, as well as honey, liqueurs, chocolates, fish, extra virgin olive oil or Fasnia figs.

Tenerife brought the uniqueness and diversity of its wines to more than 3,000 people, through 48 references from the six denominations of origin of the Island (Abona, Orotava Valley, Güímar Valley, Tacoronte-Acentejo, Ycoden-Daute-Isora and Las Islas Canary Islands).

In the different culinary demonstrations, presentations and tastings, the entire capacity was covered. By the way, the proposal to pair Lava chocolate with Tenerife wines aroused special interest, as well as the culinary demonstrations with tasting, whose preparations were focused on promoting artisanal fish. The chefs Elías Rodríguez, from the Bejeque restaurant, and Braulio Simancas, from Silbo Gomero, showed in a presentation of the fishing products of the Canary Islands with a workshop where tuna, amberjack, viejas, limpets and old potatoes from the Canary Islands were present. For dessert, cheeses from the islands were served. Also present were the biologist Agustín Espinosa, and the fishermen Ruymán Lorenzo Gabino and Yeray Ramos Hernández, who highlighted the importance of fishing for the care of the environment in the Canary Islands.

Notable figures from the world of wine, communicators and sommeliers passed through the Tenerife stand, such as David Robledo, National Gastronomy Award winner for Best Sommelier in Spain 2014, or Manuel Isoler, sommelier of the Royal House.

Renowned chefs such as Teresa Azafrán, Juan Pozuelo and David Luengo also learned about the island’s culinary proposals. In the same way, the presence of Emilio Gallego, General Secretary of Hospitality of Spain, and David Ríos, awarded the prize for the best bartender in the world in 2013, stood out.

The culinary proposal of Tenerife also attracted multiple gastronomic journalists, such as the cases of Celso Vázquez (Trotamateles), Ana Rojo (Digital Journalist), Carla Royo Villanova (Hola Viajes), Juan Carlos Carpintero (Here the land), Sergio Crovetto (Very foodie), Miguel Ángel Sánchez (Hands on the table) or Marga Rodríguez (Gastroamantes).

The thirty-sixth edition of the Gourmets Show included 70,000 square meters and more than 2,000 exhibitors, in which the participants were able to discover and taste more than 55,000 quality products and drinks. Contests, championships, prizes, tastings and culinary demonstrations were organized, among many other activities linked to the world of wine and gastronomy.

A positive balance

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Javier Parrilla, assesses for THE DAY the impact that the participation of Tenerife has represented in this important gastronomic event“where we have surprised again with a proposal that has combined tradition, innovation and sustainability,” he explained.

Parrilla assures that “we are aware that our primary sector cannot compete in size, but in quality, which forces us to continue working on this new line of marketing towards gourmet products,” he says. “Hence the importance also that Tenerife, and a varied offer of our local product, have been present with such force in this important international showcase.”
