Fishermen demonstrate in Santa Cruz against offshore wind

Representatives of the 10 fishermen’s associations of Tenerife, restaurateurs from San Miguel de Tajao and even schoolchildren from Arico gathered yesterday, from ten to twelve in the morning, in front of the headquarters of the Port Authority in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to show their rejection to the future installation of marine wind farms (offshore) off the coast of Güímar, Fasnia, Arico and Granadilla de Abona, as stated in the POEM (Plan for the Management of Marine Spaces) of the Ministry of Ecological Transition.

The fishermen consider that the installation of these marine parks, both anchored to the bottom and those that are attached to platforms, “are not compatible with fishing”, as defended by Fran García, manager of the fishermen’s association of San Miguel de Tajao, who yesterday demanded the suspension of those projects.

The Santa Cruz Port Authority has wanted to clarify that this is a private initiative, which is processed by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, which is the one that issues the environmental impact and decides whether to execute the project. It ensures that the procedure that pursues the final authorization is a guarantee procedure, in which those potentially affected can present, in the process of public information, the documentation and allegations that they consider pertinent.

It also recalls that the company responsible for the project and the Tajao fishermen have held various meetings in order to reach the necessary consensus, as well as that the first studies carried out by the company in similar facilities show that the marine ecosystem has not been affected.
