The Plenary of La Laguna approved yesterday, during its ordinary session, a motion presented by the government group (PSOE, Unidas se puede and Avante), with only the PP and Cs voting against, to preserve the values of the coast of Punta del Hidalgo, with measures such as urging the Government of the Canary Islands to declare a protected natural area, in the figure of a site of scientific interest, to said coastline, as well as to ask the State to “complete urgently” its declaration of Place of Community Interest and its inclusion in the Natura 2000 Network.

To this is added “continue to maintain a line of collaboration with the Government’s Department of Ecological Transition to revoke the expired concession to the Charco de la Arena Recreational Society” for the occupation of this puddle and its return to public use. A file that seems to be in the Constitutional Court at this time on behalf of the company to achieve renewal, according to what the spokesman for the PP, Manolo Domínguez, pointed out, who advocated waiting for the court’s resolution and eliminating said point of the motion.

In this line, the Councilor for the Environment, José Luis Hernández, also announced that, just during the plenary session, he had received information that it seems that the General Directorate of the Coast had decided to reject the request for an extension of the concession of the swimming pools of the Altagay establishment, which would then become publicly accessible, although he pointed out that the company would probably resort to it.

Likewise, the motion also urges the regional government to complete the work for the declaration of the Punta del Hidalgo Marine Reserve and that it be processed separately from that of Teno, also approved in another PP motion; and that they declare the coast rustic land of agrarian protection, not including it in the Tourism Territorial Plan, and making it compatible with the Place of Community Interest.

twinning
On the other hand, the Plenary approved as an institutional motion the proposal of the mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, for the twinning of La Laguna with the Ukrainian city of Leópolis and the creation of a commission for the definition of common projects and proposed program of activities , with a commitment to humanitarian cooperation and cultural exchange.

Likewise, the Plenary also addressed the motion presented by the spokesman for Avante and Councilor for Town Planning, Santiago Pérez, for the City Council to use the historical shield of La Laguna in all official acts, documents and communications, and which, according to what he indicated, left to be used “through the facts by another government and that the successive ones have not changed.” And he denounced that “I interpret that there was a process to dilute the identity symbols of La Laguna and question its continuity as an independent municipality.”

A motion that was not approved and that was supported by the PP, Cs and the PSOE, but not by the other government partner, Unidas se puede, which presented an alternative amendment, since they consider that it is a shield “imposed, the result of a colonial reality that makes no sense in 2023,” said its spokesman, Rubens Ascanio.

The amendment included that “the City Council and its areas will continue to make use of the logos and/or brands and institutional images in accordance with current regulations” and urges a “future process of collective reflection on institutional brands and images”. Amendment that went ahead with the support of CC, which added a point to start a file to regularize, recognize, withdraw or modify any of the existing logos and establish criteria and procedure for the creation of any type of logo, establishing the Board of Government as an organ for its approval.

Santiago Pérez had pointed out that, if this amendment is approved, “I am within my right to appeal the plenary agreement.”
