The Route of Hermano Pedro will be held on the 22nd

The XVI Route of the Way of Hermano Pedro, the first saint of Canary Islandswill be held on April 22. The Town Hall of Saint Michael of Abona, through the Department of Culture, invites you to travel the 19 kilometers that run between Vilaflor and the religious space of La Cueva, in Granadilla de Abona. To do this, it will make available various free buses through different points in the municipality both for the transfer of pilgrims to Vilaflor and for the return, as reported in a note.

In addition to first saint of the Canary Islands, Brother Pedro is also considered the first in Guatemala and Central America for having carried out his missionary work there. He was beatified in 1980 in the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Basilica and canonized in Guatemala City by Pope John Paul II in 2002.

The path of Hermano Pedro begins in the church of San Pedro Apóstol, in Vilaflor, and goes down and crosses the municipalities of San Miguel de Abona and Granadilla de Abona, until it reaches the coast of El Médano, where the cave in which this saint is venerated. «Do not stop being part of this path, symbol of collective memory and of great natural, cultural, patrimonial and religious value», indicate from the San Miguel City Council, which adds that those interested can obtain more information by contacting the telephone number 922700000 (extension 1503-1504) or by writing to [email protected].

Saint Hermano Pedro has great devotion in Tenerife and in the Canary Islands. So much so that, as it will be remembered, the Cabildo adhered in 2022 to the agreement of the Vilaflor City Council for the declaration of Brother Pedro as “co-patron of the Canary Islands”. The insular decision was adopted in a plenary session by 27 votes in favor and two against, and came after a motion defended by the counselor of Canarian Coalition (CC), Efraín Medina, who stressed that the work of the first saint of the Archipelago “is known throughout the world and arouses great devotion in Central America.”
