He faces a challenge that does not seem easy a priori: ending 28 years of PSOE hegemony in Guía de Isora. Ana Dorta (Canary Islands Coalition) assumes the challenge convinced that it comes to her at the best moment for her since she started in politics.
Do these elections have something special for you?
“Yes, because I arrive with more personal growth. The experience of developing responsible tasks in the Government of the Canary Islands has allowed me to get to know the Administration much better from the inside and to know how urgent it is to respond to the needs of the people”.
-Guía de Isora has never been an easy municipality for the Canary Islands Coalition. Why don’t you see the message of your party?
“We were very close to the Mayor’s Office in 2011, but it is clear that something has failed here and we all have to sing the mea culpa. There is more to see the levels of abstention. People must be more involved in solving the problems of their towns and neighbourhoods. Everything is political in life. We have to do more pedagogy”.
-The pacts do not usually work in Guía de Isora…
“If the PSOE loses three councilors, the conditions will be in place for a change. In that case we will speak with the PP”.
What are the priorities of the municipality in the next four years?
“The main one must be to put the nursing home into operation after so many promises and a delay of more than three years. It is an essential resource for many families. The other priority is safety. It is necessary to increase the number of troops of the Local Police and fill the vacancies due to retirement, in addition to requesting reinforcements from the Civil Guard. People have to feel safe.”
-What sensations do you perceive among the neighbors and groups with whom you are meeting? What do they convey to you?
“Above all, concern about the rise in prices, especially mortgages and rents. There are families that cannot send their children to the University of La Laguna because they cannot pay the fees. If I am mayor I want to increase scholarships in all sectors of the school age and expand professional and language education”.
-Are you in favor of maintaining the commitment to develop a quality hotel facility without excesses?
“I am committed to excellent tourism, but first what I want to know is what the Guía de Isora City Council has planned, because in 20 years four new hotels have been presented to us through the media. I wonder what territorial planning has been done in my municipality. My goal is to agree on it among all”.
-She was general director of Educational Infrastructure in the last legislature and verified the lack of educational centers in the South. What is the reality now?
“Things remain the same as we left them. A few days ago, the IES Parque La Reina was presented to great fanfare, but without equipment, that is, without finishing or receiving reception, and the Adeje Vocational Training Center is also pending. Today there are the same classrooms in the South as four years ago. Not one more.”
-What message will you emphasize in this long electoral campaign?
“I only ask that they give me a four-year opportunity to demonstrate to the residents of Guía de Isora that it can be managed in another way, from transparency and under the principle of equal opportunities for all.”
