Consolidation work on the ruins of the old church of san agustin They are currently detained awaiting the approval of the modification of the work, as confirmed yesterday by the Area of Works and Infrastructures of the City of La Laguna. A modification that involves both small changes in the original project, in terms of the work inside the property, as well as the adaptation to the current increase in prices of materials and transport that is experienced in a general way throughout the sector, as they explained.
The modification of the work has been sent for supervision by the Office of the Casco of the Urban Planning Management and, later, it will be sent to the Heritage area of the Cabildo for its approval. Until the modification is approved, you cannot legally act inside the buildingpointed out from the municipal area, although they pointed out that with the incorporation of this year’s budget, it will be possible to act on items that affected the facade of the property, which is why the scaffolding that is still seen on the outside has been maintained.
The works to recover the ruins of the old church, destroyed by fire in 1964, and opening them to the public started at the beginning of last year 2022, after having been awarded for 845,209 euros. A project that, as they recalled from the City Council at the time, dates back to 2005, although it was at the end of 2009 when the execution projects in the demolition and consolidation phase and in the rehabilitation phase were delivered.
Even so, it was not until 2016 when the modification of the consolidation project was awarded, to adapt it to the current regulations that allow the access of people to the interior, delivered to the City Council in October of that same year, but its execution did not materialize until last 2022, when the works began.
However, the general rise in prices in the construction sector was causing a slowdown in work, which has now been halted until the modification of the work is approved.
The fire of June 2, 1964 destroyed one of the religious buildings with the greatest historical and heritage value in the Canary Islands. The old church of San Agustín dated from the beginning of the 16th century, built on a site donated by the Adelantado Alonso Fernández de Lugo to the Augustinian community for the construction of a convent.
