The Island Ring, a complex construction machinery that will facilitate mobility in Tenerife and in the different regions of the Island, is beginning to materialize, although it is not exempt from new obstacles.

An example is the first technical modification in the El Tanque-Santiago del Teide section to avoid an environmental catastrophe in Barranco Hondo, located in the first municipality. The General Director of Road Infrastructure of the Government of the Canary Islands, José Luis Delgado, explains that when construction began on the Northern section of the Ring “it was detected that the slope of the road completely crossed this ravine, covered by a laurel forest and, therefore, Therefore, it had to be redirected following the indications of the Insular Water Council, since if it was taken 250 meters up and another 250 down the road, an environmental catastrophe would occur”. This department and the Regional Council for Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning agreed that the initially contemplated work could not be carried out; therefore, “it was decided to raise the slope of the road so as not to touch the bed of the ravine and pass with a viaduct over it that saved it.”

This change represents a significant environmental improvement compared to the solution initially evaluated. It does not entail any budgetary modification and it does not require being subjected again to an environmental impact assessment procedure, according to the provisions of current legislation, since it is not expected that the proposed changes may have significant adverse effects on the environment, but rather everything contrary.

extra lane
The width was also increased to anticipate the additional lane for slow vehicles that will run parallel to the main work, adds Delgado.

However, as published yesterday by the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC), it does require urgent occupation of the assets and rights affected by forced expropriation given the urgency of the work.

In total, 186,176 square meters will be expropriated, mostly for agricultural use and belonging to individuals, although there are also affected farms belonging to the municipalities of Santiago del Teide and El Tanque, the Cabildo de Tenerife and the Insular Water Council.

Period to present claims
Interested parties, as published by the BOC, may submit allegations to the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing and up to the time of drawing up the corresponding prior records for the sole purpose of correcting possible material errors in the enumeration or description of the goods and affected rights.

Likewise, they may file an optional appeal for reinstatement before the Government of the Canary Islands, within a period of one month from the day following their notification or publication, or directly a contentious-administrative appeal before the competent Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands ( TSJC), within two months from the day following its notification or publication
