From sunrise to sunset in full moon

Plenilunio – Beer Festival, Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena.

Ten years ago Plenilunio was born, a novel initiative to fill the streets of the capital of Tenerife with leisure and culture during a full moon night. The first edition was held on September 21, 2013. Despite the reduced hours, from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., that event attracted some 50,000 people and exceeded forecasts. The Museum of Nature and Archeology (MUNA) alone registered 6,500 visitors that night, the average influx expected for an entire month. Those six hours of the first year gave way, in the following editions, to a whole day of activities, from morning to night. In 2015, there were already 85,000 people talking. In 2017, the City Council decided to extend the proposal to two days, Saturday and Sunday. In addition, by then, Full Moon was already celebrated twice a year, once in spring and once in autumn. Later, the forced pause due to the restrictions of the pandemic arrived… And so we planted ourselves in 2023, with the 14th edition of Plenilunio Santa Cruz and with three consecutive days of programming, in 17 different locations.

“Very good” edition

In the absence of knowing the exact number of attendees, we already know the quality of this Full Moon 2023. And 9 out of 10 participants in this edition consider that the offer was “good or very good”. A balance that corresponds to what has been lived during these three days. Only the concerts at Café Quijano and Revolver (Friday and Saturday) brought together thousands of Santa Cruz residents and visitors. The Plaza de la Candelaria was filled for two consecutive nights: full of music lovers in front of the stage and good live performances on it, with two bands that demonstrated why they are among the most recognized on the Spanish music scene in recent decades. In the case of Revólver, this was also the first free concert of his “Addicted to Euphoria” tour, which began in February. Carlos Goñi himself, through the social network Instagram, shared a video from Tenerife in which he stated that he was remembering “one of the great moments of his career”, because Sunday, April 2, coincided with the 30th anniversary of the recording of “Básico”, an album that “changed our lives”, he said. And he defined his time in Santa Cruz as an “unforgettable weekend.” Another of the events with the greatest public success was the session by DJ Jonay, within the programming of The Rave Kulture on the stage of the esplanade of Avenida de Anaga. The Tenerife disc jockey is also celebrating his three decades of career this year. Full moon Santa Cruz 2023 is sponsored by Fundación Cepsa, Sanitas, Coca-Cola, Volkswagen and CaixaBank, in addition to the Government of the Canary Islands and Tourism Promoter Canary Islandswith European funds REACT and FEDER.

From sunrise to sunset in full moon

One day in Plenilunio Santa Cruz 2023 gave a lot. The day could perfectly well start early in the Herbie Tenerife, the replica of the well-known Volkswagen sedan or beetle with the emblematic number 53, the protagonist of half a dozen films in the second half of the 20th century. From there, the children dragged their parents to the toy libraries in the Plaza del Príncipe or the storytellers or the face painters, or the globofexia… Be careful because at 1:00 p.m., The Rave Kulture initiative had workshops on how to play (well) records vinyl. Lunch and craft beer to face a vibrant afternoon. For example, with a visit to the Museum of Carnival, to continue with Ana Obando’s violin performance at the Market and end the night with the Revólver concert in a crowded Plaza de la Candelaria. An unforgettable Full Moon by day and by night.
