SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 1 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Canary Islands Health Service, through the Primary Care Management of Tenerife, promotes and strengthens the Minor Surgery service, extending it to eleven health centers on the island, after increasing the number of units it had since 2021 by eight .

During the year 2022, the professionals of the Minor Surgery units of the Tenerife health centers performed a total of 8,814 interventions, a figure similar to that reached in Gran Canaria, which registered 8,634 surgeries of this type, with which among the two health areas carried out more than 17,400 interventions. This is one of the measures contemplated in the Comprehensive Strategy for Primary and Community Care, +AP.

Minor surgery encompasses those minimally invasive surgical techniques that only require local anesthesia, are generally performed on superficial tissues, and do not require hospital admission. These interventions, normally of short duration, are included in the portfolio of Primary Care services.

With the aim of promoting this activity, the Primary Care Management conditioned new spaces and human and material resources. Thus, to the three Basic Health Zones (ZBS) that already provided this type of service, located in the Health Centers of Icod, Laguna-Geneto and Los Realejos, in 2022 eight more ZBS were added: Añaza, San Isidro, Ruíz of Padrón, Orotava-Dehesas, Laguna-Universidad, Adeje, Anaga and Tejina.

Likewise, the Advanced Minor Surgery teams from the Taco and La Vera health centers doubled to cover the entire northern area of Tenerife and a large part of the Metropolitan and Southern areas.

In addition to the urgent interventions that were carried out by the health personnel in their consultations in other ZBS, these specialized units complemented the activity and allowed the development of the SCS Minor Surgery Protocol.

GOALS

The objective of the year 2022 was to unify criteria, expand the service, enable own consultations for Minor Surgery in more health centers, provide updated training in all ZBS regarding Basic Minor Surgery and, in parallel, improve accessibility to the Surgery service. Advanced Minor, following the lines of the SCS Minor Surgery Protocol, in force since 2009.

Quick reference material in the form of infographics has been designed for health professionals from the Management on suture threads, Langer’s lines, etc., with the purpose of visually showing specific information or data in such a way that its practical consultation is affordable.

A course on Minor Surgery in Primary Care was also carried out from the Añaza Surgery Unit with the collaboration of other basic minor surgery units.

Likewise, the MIR and EIR postgraduate training already have the two Advanced Minor Surgery units and the Añaza Basic Minor Surgery unit as accredited centers for teaching, which allows further expansion of the specific skills training of future specialists.
