Latest news on the La Palma volcano

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Oct 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cumbre Vieja volcano, which erupted 13 days ago in the Cabeza de Vaca area, in the municipality of El Paso, has already emitted 80 million cubic meters of magmatic material, almost double that of the Teneguía, which entered eruption in 1971 and shed more than 43 million.

The description was provided this Friday by the president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, at a press conference accompanied by the Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños, and the president of the Cabildo de La Palma, after the meeting of the first mixed commission between the State and the Canarian institutions.

Torres has pointed out that “history will tell” what capacity this volcano finally has, but has made it clear that it is still “far” from knowing if the eruption is at the beginning or near the end. “It is not foreseeable that we can say it,” he commented.

The president has also said that the office of attention to the victims will open imminently in the Casa Massieu de Los Llanos de Aridane with personnel from public companies of the autonomous community in the case of GMR, Gesplan, Visocan and Icavi, and has announced the hiring 14 social workers to assess the personal situation of each affected person.

Along these lines, he has indicated that the first 16 homes will be bought next week and the next, another 26, in order to have around a hundred before the end of the year.

In addition, he has made it clear that the “priority” will be for people who have lost their only home and have no alternative accommodation – for now there are only less than 200 people relocated in the Fuencaliente hotel.

Torres has also commented that work is being done to improve the provisional roads enabled to maintain communication with the coast of Los Llanos de Aridane and in systems that guarantee the supply of drinking water and irrigation if they are finally affected.

The president has insisted that the emergency continues and therefore, has urged to comply “to the maximum” the recommendations of the security operation so that the eruption culminates without personal injury.

“We will not be able to replace the pain, although we will make every effort, but the key is that we are all here and there is no relevant personal injury,” he stressed.

HERNÁNDEZ ZAPATA, CONCERNED WITH THE NEW LAVA LAUNDRY

For his part, the president of the Cabildo de La Palma has affirmed that “there is still more and more drama ahead and greater attention to people”, although he has emphasized the “example” that all the administrations are giving working together, because ” transmits calm “and gives” certainty “to those affected.

Hernández Zapata has valued that the central government has taken into account all the contributions of the palm institutions since “it is the only way to move forward” and therefore, he sees “priority” now to open the office of attention to the victims.

Likewise, he has indicated that the home buying process “is key”, as is signing a rental plan.

The president of La Palma has confessed to being “covered” by all the administrations and trusts that the island will come out of this situation, although he has not hidden his “concern” about the start of a new lava flow that he hopes to join the previous one.
