The first residence for intellectual disabilities opens

La Victoria de Acentejo opened this Thursday its first residence for people with intellectual disabilities. The Council of Tenerife and the Victoriero City Council inaugurated a residence with capacity for 12 users and that has been done thanks to an investment of 400,000 euros, which have been contributed by the Island Corporation. The victorious Town Hall paid for a first phase (60,000 euros) and ceded the two disused buildings that were once occupied by the old unitary school in the La Vera neighborhood.

Both buildings, with a total area of 310 square meters, have been rehabilitated, unified and transformed to house this resource that seeks, in the words of the mayor of La Victoria, Juan Antonio García, that “people with intellectual disabilities can advance, improving their autonomy and betting on their active inclusion in society.

The first phase of the residence, which featured ssix seats, began operating on March 9, 2020, but due to the pandemic it could not be inaugurated then. It has six double bedrooms, three living rooms, a kitchen, a dining room, an office, a laundry room and four bathrooms, three of which are adapted. Access is through its upper level, which guarantees an accessible itinerary to the entire complex, while creating an outdoor recreation space, with a large terrace and patio.

Management is in charge of a team of specialized professionals comprising four caregivers and a full-time social worker, as well as a part-time psychologist, therapist, entertainer, cleaner, and cook. The cost of the services for two years is 667,900 euros, which are 100% subsidized by the Cabildo. The island councilor for Social Action, Marian Franquet, stressed that “this residence not only improves the quality of life of people with disabilities but also of their families.”
