Franquet affirms that the data is “worrying” and advances that the workshops and talks will be reformulated

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 30 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife has presented this Thursday the first phase of the Plan for the Prevention of Gender Violence in Preadolescents, Adolescents and Young People, the first to be carried out in the Canary Islands, and which includes, among other things, that more than half of the Young people between the ages of 18 and 22 believe that men and women suffer gender violence equally.

This first phase consisted in the elaboration of a diagnosis on the situation of these groups with respect to gender violence, among whose conclusions it stands out that the young population does not understand the concept of gender violence and does not know where to go to report it.

The event was attended by the Third Vice President and Minister of Social Action, Marián Franquet, the Managing Director of Equality and Prevention of Gender Violence, Priscila de León and the coordinator of Equality, Prevention and Fight against Gender Violence of Insular Institute of Social and Socio-Health Care (IASS), María José Pestana Yanes.

Priscila de León explained that “despite the fact that practically 100% of the surveyed population claimed to have received a lot of training and information on gender violence, more than half of the population between the ages of 18 and 22 believe that gender violence women and men suffer equally.

Moreover, “many of the boys admit to feeling attacked or discriminated against when the term gender equality or gender violence appears,” he added.

The CEO also emphasized that “in order to act effectively it is necessary to know and quantify and this qualitative work that has been carried out in collaboration with the protagonists, who are young people and professionals, will serve to mark the new roadmap to follow in the development of island public policies”.

For her part, Marián Franquet stressed that they have been “hearing about the importance of prevention for years, but it was necessary for someone to take the initiative and put on the table the necessary mechanisms so that prevention and equality become transversal elements in all areas”.

In this sense, he stressed “the importance, now, of seeking the collaboration and involvement of all public institutions, because otherwise the Plan will be destined to fail.”

With regard to the results, Franquet assured that “they are worrisome” because although in some matters they are “getting it right”, in others it is shown that the institutions are being “wrong”. “That’s where we need to go in,” he added.

From the diagnosis it can be deduced, for example, that the programs, workshops and talks that are proposed in educational and youth centers “are not arriving in the most appropriate way, an indicator that has to serve to reformulate the methodology, correct and advance, because without prevention you cannot end gender violence”.

PSYCHOLOGICAL VIOLENCE, THE MOST COMMON

María José Pestana Yanes delved into the main results obtained from this diagnosis and explained that psychological violence is the type of violence most suffered between 16 and 20 years of age.

“Issues such as the deprivation of going with friends, control over clothing or through whatsapp, although the young people do not identify it as gender violence, but as a toxic relationship,” he said.

In the same way, it stressed that “a large number of young people do not know where to go to denounce either, despite all the talks, programs, campaigns or initiatives that are proposed from educational and youth centers.”

The coordinator valued, however, the work carried out throughout the mandate.

“Between 2021 and 2022 alone, we have held 209 equality and prevention talks, reaching more than 1,700 students. In addition, we have launched actions with teachers, exhibitions, workshops, programs, theater performances, meetings, awareness campaigns and training courses for the councils of the island, but it is important to get to the root”, he pointed out.

This diagnosis has been carried out with the participation and collaborative work of the young people themselves and of professionals from public and private entities that directly and indirectly intervene with this population group.

Specifically, 824 surveys were carried out, 412 to pre-adolescents and adolescents in schools, young people in youth houses and ULL students between the ages of 11 and 20, and 412 surveys to direct or indirect intervention agents, as well as other professionals in the field. educational, cultural, youth and sports and equality.
