SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 29 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Platform for People Affected by the Eruption of the Cumbre Vieja Volcano 2021 has registered this Wednesday in the Parliament of the Canary Islands the Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP) to create a law on volcanoes in the archipelago.
One of the spokespersons, Juan González, has detailed to the media that they have three months to gather a total of 15,000 signatures so that the process can begin in the Chamber.
As there will not be time to carry out this process in this Legislature – this Wednesday the plenary sessions ended – the promoters hope that the ILP debate will be the first point of the next one so that it can be approved in autumn .
González has admitted that “it is not very usual” to process a law of this type through the popular initiative but it has been done so with the aim that “it belongs to everyone and not to anyone” and with a lot of participation since it is necessary to end with the current “legal vacuum”.
“To be safe living on volcanic islands, a volcano law is needed,” he added, emphasizing that “we must take into account the safety of people and the property of each person affected if there were an eruption on any island.”
He has insisted that it is about “living better in the Canary Islands” as a result of what has happened after the eruption in La Palma because “there is no legal certainty or legal protection”, in such a way that it is “logical” that a law be drawn up and that it be applied retroactively to those affected on the ‘beautiful island’.
