SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 29 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Plenary Session of the Parliament of the Canary Islands has unanimously approved this Wednesday of all the groups the opinion of the study commission of the demographic challenge that is postponed for the next Legislature and will be the first to be opened with the new political course.

The opinion opens the door to analyze, among other things, the impact of double insularity, the effectiveness of economic and tax policies, access to housing or land use.

The NC spokesman, Luis Campos, president of the study commission, has admitted that the Parliament of the Canary Islands “needs more time to make decisions” on the current situation of demography on the islands.

He has valued that the demographic uniqueness of the Canary Islands has been identified, beyond “if we are many or if we are few”, since the characteristics of the population “have completely changed”, with islands that grow a lot, some stagnant and others that decrease .

He has indicated that the key is to find the “balance” between population, territory and economy and with answers even from the insular point of view, since it is a “very complex” debate that is not based only on the number of inhabitants.

Ricardo Fernández (CS) has highlighted the “calm” debate of the study commission and has supported that it continue in the next Legislature and not “close falsely” because it is necessary to decide “where the Canary Islands should be in the next 50 years”.

Jesús Ramos (ASG) has said that “there is no doubt” that the commission should continue its work in the next Legislature and appreciated that the aging of the islands, the growth of tourist areas and the depopulation of some territories are analyzed.

Manuel Marrero, spokesman for Sí Podemos, has commented that we must work “on data and not opinions or perceptions” and analyze demography in its relationship with the territory, the economy and resources and guide it towards improving the quality of life of the citizens. “You have to think long term with high beams,” he stressed.

Luz Reverón, of the Popular Group, has assumed that the demography of the Canary Islands “is a very big challenge to address” in such a way that it is preferable to “see you later” and continue the work in the next Legislature since it is necessary to have a focus ” own” for the Canary Islands.

CC: THE DEMOGRAPHIC CHALLENGE MUST BE TRANSVERSAL

The spokesman for the Nationalist Group, José Miguel Barragán, has asked how quality of life is measured in the Canary Islands and with what economic model, stressing that before the commission there were “preconceived and partisan ideas” that have been able to change as a result of the first study committee sessions.

He pointed out that it has become “very clear” that the demographic challenge must be “transversal” and that it cannot be done without the participation of society and all public institutions, and he hopes that the work in the next Legislature will begin “from minute one “.

Iñaki Lavandera, from the Socialist Group, commented that people must be put “at the center of the debate” on the future of the archipelago, also stressing that there is a “differential base” with three groups of islands, each with its own characteristics. “Everything ends in improving the quality of life”, he has indicated.
