The Adeje Folklore School Group carried out yesterday the staging of the Water Route, a scenic proposal that arose in 2016 with the purpose of commemorating the history, traditions, trades and customs that made transparent the relationship of the Adejero people with Water.

Throughout the tour, which began in the Barranco del Infierno and ended at the Casa Fuerte, in the center of Adeje, it was possible to discover the symbols and history of a society linked to and dependent on this essential resource.

Adeje was a privileged place centuries ago, in the southern context. This zone, with the largest number of springs in the southern area of the Island; two at the top of the Erques ravine, three in El Aserradero, two in the Infierno ravine; one at the head of the Agua ravine, another at the foot of Roque de los Brezos and, finally, the one that was located next to Roque de Imoque.

Adeje, in the south, was the place of settlement of an important group of the Guanche population. In front of this, the Great Tinerfe, master of the lands and men of this Island. After the conquest in the south, Adeje and its water played an essential role. The water resources from the Barranco del Infierno (River of Adeje) flowed through its channel until it emptied into the sea.

In the mid-19th century, Pascual Madoz described Adeje as follows: “The land presents a sad and monotonous aspect in the part occupied by the hills that limit the Valley; In the rest it is delicious, and includes the richest lands that are found throughout this side of the island; sufficient water for irrigation, the boulevard called del infierno, which descends from the highest of the mountains through the channel that forms the Agua ravine at its bottom.
Historically, the presence of water enabled the development of the municipality and led to the construction of numerous hydraulic infrastructures that are still preserved. With this route it is intended to value real estate such as the Casa Fuerte; its walls are the perfect setting for the representation of the life of past generations around water.
