SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 24 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, and the insular councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, have visited this Friday the repair works of the largest reclaimed water pipe on the island, endowed with a budget of 1, 4 million euros.

The visit was also attended by the mayoress of Candelaria, Mari Brito, and the manager of the public company Balsas de Tenerife (Balten), Ana Sánchez.

During the meeting, Pedro Martín explained that the objective is “to preserve this strategic facility for Balten and for the south of the island, a pioneer in the Canary Islands, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary on April 14 and which in recent years has presented an important deterioration”.

The island president valued the “investment effort” being made to recover this pipeline, which is more than 70 kilometers long, and assured that they are also “planning improvements” in different facilities to transfer water from Santa Cruz to the north and open new deposits and ponds that make it possible to have reclaimed water for agriculture, “which requires alternatives for irrigation”.

Javier Parrilla stressed that “the Cabildo has promoted this action to guarantee the care of the main artery for conducting reclaimed water, the most important in Tenerife.”

In fact, he said, “its maintenance is key to irrigating crops in the south of the island.”

The island official also emphasized that “when the purification systems and desalination extensions are in operation, both at the Santa Cruz treatment plant and the Adeje-Arona desalination plant, this pipeline will guarantee the hydraulic balance in the island, one of the main objectives since the beginning of the mandate”.

For her part, the mayoress of Candelaria, Mari Brito, highlighted “the importance of carrying out these conservation works and that the agricultural sector is really being attended to to guarantee that the purified water reaches the farmers in good condition.”

From the City Council, he commented, “we aspire to join this project, which is already consolidated on the island.”

The works include the repair and improvement of the reclaimed water pipeline between the pumping station located under the Buenos Aires WWTP, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, to the Valle San Lorenzo reservoir, in Arona, which consists of a first section of 6.63-kilometer pipeline that carries the water to a reservoir located in El Tablero, with a capacity of 15,000 cubic meters, reports the Cabildo in a note.

SAN LAWRENZO VALLEY

Starting from El Tablero, the 62.22-kilometer-long transport pipeline itself develops, which runs practically parallel to the Autopista del Sur to the Valle de San Lorenzo pond, with a capacity of 250,000 cubic meters.

Through this action, the passage works, manholes and other structural elements will also be improved.

In the same way, valve elements will be replaced, the anchors will be reinforced and new control devices will be installed.

At the beginning of 2020, by virtue of the principle of prevention, the Cabildo determined to carry out a complete inspection of this system and the proposal of actions to improve its guarantee of maintenance and conservation.

All the services in this contract have been optimized from the perspective of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the 2030 Agenda, requiring an express commitment from bidders and incorporating environmental criteria transversally.
