Manuel Gonzalez Mesa was born on May 1, 1944 in the orotava but he has spent most of his life working for the neighbors of The mountainin The Realejoswhich has been an adopted neighborhood since I was just two years old. Manolo, the one from the mountain, is a historic neighborhood leader, involved in the development of this popular nucleus of the Valley since more than 50 years ago.

He City Hall of Los Realejos has just announced the start of an honors file in favor of this illustrious resident of La Montaña, who was president of the neighborhood associationstrove to raise funds for the construction of the church, was an important part in the creation of the Association of Mothers and Fathers of Students (Ampa) of the school of La Montaña, presided over the Federation of Neighborhood Associations of Los Realejoswas councilor of the PSOE in the City Council, between 1999 and 2003, and a prominent promoter of the Club for the Elderly and Pensioners Virgen del Pilar de La Montañawhich he currently chairs, about to turn 79 years old.

Son of Candelaria Gonzalez MesaHe was the second of eight siblings. Honoring his birth date, when commemorating the International Workers Daysince I had barely 8 years old he began to earn a living “making orchards”. At barely 10 years old, he left to work in a bar of the area and, later, he trained as a carpenter, his true vocation. He served as catechist at the neighborhood church and from a very young age he was involved in solving the problems and needs of the neighborhood.

With just 8 years of age he was already working “making orchards”, and since he was 10, “in a bar”

After collaborating with the elders of the neighbourhood, with the church and the legion of mary, had a prominent role since the 70s in the neighborhood movement; he chaired the neighborhood neighborhood association between 1985 and 1999, a position that he combined in the 90s with the presidency of the Federation of Neighborhood Associations of Los Realejos. That vocation for public service led him to get involved, in the ranks of the PSOE, in local politics. During one term, with Jose Vincent Gonzalez as mayor, he served as mayor and together with his colleagues managed to carry out projects such as the park of La Higuerita. The father of five children, he also collaborated in promoting the participation of the families of students at the school and the elders of the neighborhood, through the Virgen del Pilar Club, which he still presides over.

The mayor of Los Realejos, Adolfo González (PP)and the Councilor for the Elderly and Citizen Participation, Macarena Hernandez (PP)visited the nucleus of La Montaña this week, and at the headquarters of said senior club they informed their president, Manuel Gonzalez Mesathe initiative of the realejero local government and the different associations of the elderly of the municipality of incoar record of honors and distinctions in his favor “For his vital career in favor of citizen participation and neighborhood movements of the municipality, among other facets.”

Adolfo Gonzalez highlighted “Manolo’s role as a great defender of the La Montaña neighborhood, with permanent and tireless work towards the community, always looking out for the common interest and linked, as we said, to neighborhood movements from the 70s of the last century to the present”.

The Realejero City Council promotes this file, with the councilor Macarena Hernandez as an instructor, after being approached by the municipal commission of Social Welfare and with the previous endorsement and support expressed by the different associations of the elderly in Los Realejos. She will go to full this month with the aim of “granting public recognition to this person who has been a historic active neighborhood reference in this municipality,” according to her stressed the person in charge of the Elderly and Citizen Participation of the consistory.

Once the aforementioned approval of the start of the file is given, the usual period will begin to collect the support and support provided by neighbors and citizen entities. When all these supports are available, the processing will continue with the return of the file to the plenary session of the corporation to approve it definitively.
