The Civil Guard confiscates 113 rabbits hidden in a vehicle on the dock of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Civil Guard has confiscated 113 mixed rabbits (crosses between wild and domestic), which were hidden under a tarpaulin in a vehicle that had arrived by boat at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The animals were located by agents of the Fiscal and Border Section of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, at the inspection and control points that are regularly carried out upon the arrival of the ships at the aforementioned port, the Civil Guard specified this Thursday in a release.

After detecting the presence of the animals, the agents requested the documentation related to their transport, ownership and hygienic health certificate, which the owner of the vehicle lacked.

For this reason, the agents requested the support of the Nature Protection Service of the Civil Guard (Seprona), which has taken over the mandatory investigation.

The animals have been transferred to the Tahonilla Flora and Fauna Recovery Center, attached to the Cabildo de Tenerife.

In addition, two administrative complaints have been processed, one related to infringement of the Animal Health Law, which may entail a penalty of between 600 and 60,000 euros, and another to the Hunting Law in the Canary Islands, which may entail a fine of between 30 and 9,000 euros.
