The company Proyecon Galicia, in charge of the construction of the educational center of Cho-Parque La Reina, in the municipality of Arona, which will replace the IES Guaza, known as the barracks institute, is “finishing off” the last fringes of the building, as confirmed to this newspaper by sources from the Ministry of Education, after verifying from this department the existence of “small elements” pending resolution and that appear in the contract signed with the construction company.
Once this phase is over, the habitability of the building will be processed, which already accumulates a delay of more than three years, and, “from then on, the Ministry will be in a position to give a date for the start of classes” , indicated the sources consulted.
The modification of the project and the consequent upward revision of the budget requested by the construction company, Proyecon Galicia, in addition to the setback of the pandemic, kept the work practically paralyzed for more than a year, which generated protests and mobilizations by mothers and parents of students from IES Guaza, a center built entirely with prefabricated modules and inaugurated in 2002 as a “provisional” solution to deal with the shortage of school places in the south shire.
The facilities, in which more than 500 students study and around 70 teachers teach, have numerous technical deficiencies, including water leaks in classrooms and corridors when it rains, high temperatures in summer, vibrations in floors and walls , iron falls and bathroom pipes burst, as this newspaper has reported.
The building stands on a 13,120-square-meter plot donated by the Arona City Council and will house 22 classrooms, of which 18 will be for Secondary classes and four for Baccalaureate. It will have two music classrooms, two computer rooms, two plastic and visual classrooms, and another two for group splitting for high school students. It will also have a library, two technology spaces, three laboratories, two language classrooms, an assembly hall and a covered sports hall.
