Pedro Martín maintains that the Cabildo de Tenerife complies with the law in the Arico Environmental Complex

The president of the council, Peter Martinassured today that “We are complying with the law” in the treatment of waste that is carried out in the Arico Environmental Complex. Compliance that he elevates to “scrupulous” when he talks about the Integrated Environmental Authorization and that he justified by providing figures. He claimed that the level of recovery in cardboard and glass is 98% and higher than 80% in the case of containers. What cannot be recycled is what is deposited in the discharge cell, she clarified.

He defended the policy developed by the insular Government in this matter during the mandate and reproached the mayor of Arico for choosing to “mount this riot” instead of addressing the Cabildo. “We live in pre-election times and these things must also be understood,” he added in his statements to Radio Club Tenerife.

The Arico City Council denounced before the Prosecutor’s Office “the existence of numerous deficiencies and evidence of environmental crime” in the island landfill since the technical reports show “clear evidence of irregularities in the treatment and disposal of the waste that arrives at the landfill”, by verifying the direct entry to the cell of dumping of trucks loaded with unprocessed or unsorted waste.

extraordinary plenary session

Canarian Coalition (CC) announced that it will request an extraordinary plenary session. The nationalist adviser, Blanca Pérez; the mayor of ariquero, Sebastián Martín, and the third deputy mayor and councilor for Economy, Contracting, Economic Development and Tourism, Víctor García, offered a press conference this Monday at the gates of the Environmental Complex. Perez stated that “We are going to ask for an extraordinary plenary session because we want the situation to be clarified and to settle the responsibilities. The complaint from the Arico City Council indicates that there are serious breaches in the integrated environmental authorization that will have to be clarified. It is seen that they are throwing away without any type of treatment such as construction waste and mattresses ”.

The counselor pointed out that “the Cabildo is breaking a negative record in terms of the recovery of waste and it is possible that it has to do with what the Arico City Council has denounced. This is not an electoral issue and, perhaps, someone hides behind it to cover up the serious irregularities that the Complex has.” Pérez recalled that, since 2020, the Government of the Canary Islands has not carried out an inspection and we believe that it is necessary to perform”.

Víctor García insists that the municipality loses more than one million a year in investment from the Cabildo

For his part, Sebastián Martín pointed out that “The technical report says that there are serious irregularities in the management of waste from the Environmental Complex of Tenerife”. He explained that “in less than an hour, 20 trucks entered to dump directly without being treated.” In his opinion, “the technical reports present clear evidence of violations of environmental legislation and that there may also be an alleged environmental crime.”

From the municipal technical services “we have forwarded the complaint to the environmental body, in this case to the Canarian Agency for the Protection of the Natural Environment of the General Directorate for the Environment of the Government of the Canary Islands and, as the technical reports consider that there may be indications of a crime, we have also transferred it to the Environmental Prosecutor’s Office, so that they can initiate an investigation process and determine the responsibilities”, Martín pointed out.

Víctor García focused on the fact that “Arico has lost more than one million euros per year in investments by the Cabildowho has not sat down with the Arico City Council to talk about the compensation “that the municipality received for hosting the island’s landfill.”The condition is very great for the municipality, especially for Tajao and the adjoining farms“. The councilor concluded that “the PSOE has been managing the Tenerife Environmental Complex for almost a decade and we have regressed in waste management.”
