Podemos asks to annul the declaration of insular interest of the ‘ecoresort’ of La Palma

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 20 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Podemos Canarias has requested the annulment of the Declaration of Insular Interest of the hotel complex promoted by the Cabildo de La Palma in the area of Camino Real La Pavona. The petition before the Island Administration took place hours before the PP, PSOE and CC voted unanimously in favor of a project that has generated rejection among the group of social movements on the island.

Following the legal argumentation provided by the party in the document presented to the Cabildo, there would be “appearances of illegality” present from the beginning of the procedure that culminated this Monday with the full vote of the Declaration of Insular Interest of the macro-project, which includes a luxury hotel, apartments, villas and other tourist establishments.

In their letter, from Podemos they have highlighted possible breaches of the Transparency and Access to Information laws, pointing out that the Cabildo could have breached its legal duty to provide by all means (including telematics) the documentation related to the project in public exposure phase.

In the same way, they have pointed to possible infringements of environmental regulations, pointing out the absence of the mandatory environmental impact study in a project proposed on an area protected by the Natura 2000 Network. “The violation of European directives could put at risk the perception of European funds, and this is a totally unassumable risk for the island,” they warn from Podemos.

Ros Martínez, home candidate for the regional Parliament for La Palma, has expressed her “total and absolute” rejection of an initiative that, in her opinion, “ignores the needs of a people that requires responses in terms of mobility, housing and decent employment” at the same time that “diverts the public agenda towards the interest of a privileged few”.

“It is incomprehensible that the PP, PSOE and the Canary Islands Coalition agree to turn their backs on the needs of the vast majority of our people. Our island does not need another hotel, even less while there are homeless residents.” As Martínez recalled, Laura Martín, Podemos candidate for mayor of Breña Alta, has been present at a plenary session that “will be remembered for the lack of judgment of its members.”

Martínez has also expressed the “urgency” of rethinking the tourism model to “advance towards a more diverse, dynamic and sustainable productive fabric”. “We see in other archipelagos such as the Balearic Islands that unlimited tourism ends up being very expensive for the population, and in the Canary Islands we must take note so as not to end up collapsing as well.”

“La Palma offers optimal conditions for an economy that takes care of the primary sector, generates added value and improves the lives of those who live on the island. It is time to change the tripartite recipes for destruction for a future horizon for La Palma”, he concluded.
