Sharing new perspectives, fostering creativity and exploring critical vision are the main objectives of ‘Emerge: meeting of youth photography, a new look’, a conference of youth photography which will take place this week in Tenerife. Collective learning will be part of this meeting, in which the artistic creation of citizens will be promoted based on theoretical, expository and practical training.
The event, which will take place in The lagoon on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 March, is organized by the association Karmala Culture together with the General Directorate of Youth of the Government of the Canary Islands. The activity is open to the public and you can attend with pre-registration.
Sara Fratini, one of the spokespersons for the cultural association, indicates that the idea of these conferences is “to offer a space dedicated to photography in which young people have a leading role, either to show their work or to get in touch with artists important in the sector.
Its objective is to create a space in which experiences can be shared from horizontality and familiarity, taking into consideration “how difficult it is to start”. For this reason, Fratini considers it especially important “that there be a bridge between professionals and those who are being trained”, where “the vision of each person counts”.
In addition, it will give rise to sharing poems of their own creation, given that, as Fratini points out, photography also transmits poetry visually through symbology. For this reason, he indicates, they wanted to give prominence to this artistic side.
Friday the 24th
The programming will begin at 5:00 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m. this Friday at the Cafe 7 of La Laguna, where there will be different training activities on the creation of conceptual photography and artivist (art and activism) in the Canary Islands. Likewise, there will be an open micro of poetry in which anyone who wishes can participate.
The Tenerife photographer Gema Hernández will open the meeting with a workshop on portraiture as an escape route for emotions. Next, Nadia Martín from Majorera will give training on the artivism photography, in which art becomes a tool for social change.
In the last presentation, the Senegalese multidisciplinary artist Keba Danso, who lives on the island of La Palma, will address African photography.
Saturday 25
The training sessions for the second day will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. throughout the morning and will resume at 4:00 p.m., ending at 8:15 p.m. During this time, the Insular Youth Center will host the presentations by Rebeca Saray, Cristina Otero and Ana Becerra.
The first workshop, given by Rebeca Saray, will deal with the search for tools to work on creative potential and find one’s own style within photography.
Next, Cristina Otero will present the benefits of photographic self-portraits as a catharsis. Finally, Ana Becerra’s presentation will offer tools to develop creative thinking, learn to think in images and acquire technical, psychological and personal skills.
